For sale we have a July 1944 A Lange & Söhne Silver Observation deck watch. It was purchased by the Kreigsmarine and carries all correct and relevant markings. It has a calibre 48 movement with a 35-hour power reserve indicator. The movement has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within chronometer standards. The case is Lucia.

 

It has the registration eagle to the rear, with movement number 204055 and the naval issue number M11778.

 

Inside is a beautiful, frosted gilt calibre 48 movement, jewelled to the centre with swans neck micrometer regulations and large cut compensated bi-metallic balance with overcoiled blued steel spring. The crown wheel and ratchet wheel have the Glashütte sunburst finishing. It used fine lines that radiate from the centre. The rays are curved to create a circular effect when the incident light changes.

 

The watch comes with an Extract from the archives provided by The German Watch Museum of Glashutte. The watch was purchased for use by the Deutsche Seewarte (KM), Zweigestelle Gesundbrunnen. The extract also includes copies of the original order and sales invoicing from A Lange.

 

The watch was part of an order 70 pieces strong, commenced on August 28th 1942. Each piece has a cost of 261.50 RM.

 

It is a completely original example, with no replacement parts. The serial numbers match across every aspect of this watch. The silver case is tarnished and has not been cleaned to preserve originality.

Dial:

The dial is completely original. It is a silvered dial with clear Arabic numerals and subsidiary dial for power reserve and running seconds. The brushed finish is good to the silver dial finish, with brushed concentric circles within the subsidiary dials.

 

Hands:

The hands are original. They are of Spade and Whip style with a thermally blued finish. It is bright with some oxidisation to a purple tone. The power reserve hand and second hand are also original.

 

Glass:

The acrylic crystal is original and has some light surface scratching.

 

Loop:

The crown, stem and loop are good and original in silver.

 

Case:

The case is formed of silver, of open face configuration. It is in good/average condition with original tarnishing to the silver and light surface scratching associated with ageing. It has no obvious denting, but does have some marking where a case back knife is used to pop off the back.

 

Caseback:

The push fit case back is in good condition. It is formed of silver and has light surface scratching as expected with wear. It has some wear to the engraving through use. The eagle, serial number and naval issue number are all legible. Inside, it is signed with A Lange logo and the serial 1087085.

 

Inner case back:

The inner case is formed of silver and is in good condition. Inside it has perlage finishing with Buffalo symbol and serial 1087085. To the outside it has a polished finish with light surface scratching. It has the clear original makers engraving. The hinge is very good.

 

Movement:

The movement is a A Lange calibre 48. It is a high-grade movement as expected, in excellent original condition, with all original parts.

 

The movement has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within chronometer grade. It has a daily variation of +/- 4 seconds a day.
