A very rare 1920s Art Deco Longines 18ct White gold watch with swivel lugs, cal 9.40 movement which has been serviced.
The case is large, measuring 22mm wide and 36mm long without the swivel lugs. Including the lugs it measures 47mm which makes this watch cover the wrist well. It is formed of 18ct white gold and is in excellent condition. It is a very complex case, with the main body rising from the lugs to meet a flat top presenting the dial. The side elevation is that of a truncated pyramid, demonstrating the Art Deco design influence.
This line is sharp and provides a lovely angular element to the watch. The underside of the case is curved to fit the wrist.
The top of the case oozes Art Deco too with a mixture of textures and angles with a more curved exterior stemming from the bevelled edge which falls to the side of the case. The central two panels of the top are flatter, and all elements are separated by scores down the watch to aid the texture.
Extending beyond the main body of the case is the addition of the articulated lugs which make this watch such a presence on the wrist. The central piece matches the finish of the case and curves into a T shaped bar with circular ends where the strap secures.
The top and rear of the case are polished whilst the sides have a grained finish. This adds another layer of complexity to this excellent case.
The case back is made of 18ct gold and is polished. There are some light surface scratches but the case back is in good condition for the age. It has the original case serial engraving clearly visible, which matches the movement serial. It also has a personal engraving of the initials J.M.N. It seals tightly.
The inside of the caseback is signed Longines, with the Swiss 18ct hallmark, the head of Helvetia. It is signed 18k. It is finished with a peerlage finish which is in good condition.
The dial has been refinished at some point in the past. This is clear as there is a speckled appearance across the dial.
The dial is signed Longines at 12 O’clock with a sub second dial at 6 O’clock. The railroad track runs around the exterior of the watch and the hours are indicated with Arabic numerals.
The hands would appear to be original and are thermally blued. They are in good condition with limited corrosion and no bending.
The crystal appears to be a well-matched replacement that fits the profile of the watch very well. It has some light surface scratches.
The crown is a newer replacement which has the Longines logo and is made of Stainless Steel. It is in very good condition.
The strap is a black leather Longines strap with Stainless Steel Longines buckle.
The strap will only fit up to a 7 inch wrist, so a larger strap may be needed for most wrists.
The movement is a Longines calibre 9.40 from 1928. Of note in the design are the separate bridges, the underslung ratchet wheel and the Cote De Geneve stripe finishing. The centre wheel is also jewelled which is seen in high grade movements.
The movement has also been recently serviced. It has a daily loss of -27 seconds, with an amplitude of 230 and a beat error of 0.0m/s.
