The Tudor Black Bay Red ETA 79220R is inspired by the 7900 Submariner series, released in 1978. The 41mm case is comfortable with the curved lugs, whilst a lug to lug measurement of 50mm gives the watch an impressive presence on the wrist. The watch is brushed on the top with a light polished finish on the sides and rear. The big Rose crown is impressive and in excellent condition. The Stainless bezel is unidirectional and has a bright red insert with 60-minute scale. The sapphire crystal is domed and sits above the matte black dial. The gilt minute track is expertly applied with a visible texture. The snowflake hands are gilt-edged and coated in bright luminance, with a gilt sweeping second hand.
The coin edge screw back case is to the exterior, with the serial number and reference engraved on the lugs. Inside is the automatic ETA 2824 with 25 jewels and 28,800 BPH, which has been modified, removing the date function, with improved anti-shock and updated mainspring.
The watch comes on a 22mm genuine leather watch Geckota strap with original Tudor deployment buckle.
The case has been polished as it had noticeable scratching.
What makes this watch so popular is the ETA movement and it being the first release. With more and more brands achieving in-house movements, or movements created by a specialist on their behalf, the stance towards stock-nought ETA movements has softened. This means that these soon to be, or already discontinued models and now desierable.
With Tudor going from strength to strength, in 20 year’s time the brand will have existed for the majority of its second existence, for longer with in-house movements than without. Therefore, this watches may be seen as a jump back to the renaissance era for the brand, with the oldies gaining more admiration.
