Halios watch company are from Vancouver Canada. They were founded in 2009 by watch enthusiast Jason Lim, and quickly gained the kind or reputation only few micro-brands can hope for. They are known for having unique and well considered designs, whilst offering great value for money. They specialise in divers watches, mostly between 38-41mm. Yet the Universa sitting at 38mm, represents a move towards the sports watch category.
It is incredibly common for batches to sell out within 60 seconds. I found this out myself when attempting to purchase the Pastel Blue version of the Universea a couple of months ago.
The watch comes in a dark Grey leather travel case.
The design and the finishing of the case and bracelet makes this such a unique watch. The case and bracelet have many flat surfaces and hard angles, mixing a brushed finish with polished chamfered edges. The inspiration for the watch was said to be the Lamborghini Countach, which is certainly clear with the angular design. The watch reacts to light very well, reflecting it in interesting manners.
The 38mm diameter, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 48mm, makes this a very interesting piece. The downward, angular design of the lugs, combined with the case depth of 11mm, makes this watch a very comfortable wear.
This example has a dark Grey dial. The dial can appear darker outdoors, whilst under artificial light its lighter. There is a wonderful depth to the dial, with the raised Arabic 3,6,9 and 12 numerals. The thick baton indices are also raised and are fully lumed with a polished silver border.
The hands are thin and straight Baton style hands. The central second hand has a nice touch with the mint Green arrow on the tip.
Inside the watch is a Sellita SW210-1. This movement is manually wound, with no date. It has a frequency of 28,800 BPH and also boasts hacking, with is very useful when setting the time. It also has a Nivaflex hairspring and Incabloc shock protection.
The bracelet really reminds you of a 60s/70s Zenith bracelet with the flat surfaces, chamfered finishes and chunky links. A very fun and useful feature is the micro adjustment on the clasp. This is activated by depressing the Halios logo on the bracelet. It is an exceptional addition which makes this so comfortable to wear. You are able to match the watch to the different climates and weather you may face during the day.
Condition:
The watch is in very good condition, having been lightly worn by myself. It has some surface scratching as can be expected with wear, but no nicks or major marks to the case.
