Here we have a large and impressive circa 1928 Art Deco Silver cased curved rectangular watch. It measures 25.5mm wide by 37.5mm long, which is an impressive and impactful size for the period. The dial is formed of silver and has the satin finish. The hour markers are large, italic Arabic numerals in the Art Deco font. The railroad minute track is rectangular, following the flow of the case. It has the engine turned shutter style central section, with the unusual half inset sub-second section below. The sub-second dial is circular with the detailed single second graduations. The hands are of the classic Plume style from the era in the bright thermally blued tone. The case back is curved to fit the wrist. It is hinged and opens to reveal the dial and movement. It has the hallmarking for Silver from London assay office dating to 1928. The movement is a usual and quality 16 jewel Swiss lever calibre, which has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time for the age.
The dial is such a joy on this watch. It is formed of silver and is curved to fit the case. It has the silver base tone which has a slight darkened tarnishing associated with age. The hour markers are large and bold with the Art Deco, italic stylised font. The flow of the markers is beautiful and gives the watch such personality. The railroad minute track is rectangular, with the minute dashes stretching to the corners of the case. To the centre is the shutter effect which is engraved into the dial. Below this is the half in-set square form, encompassing the circular sub-second track. The hands are thermally blued and are of Plume style. The sub-second hand is neat, with the Lollipop counterbalance. The thermally blued tone is bright and eye-catching on both.
The case is as big as they came in the period, measuring 25.4mm wide by 37.5mm in length. The total lug-to-lug measurement is 43.4mm which further increases the presence. The lug width of 20mm allows a robust width of strap, which compliments the size of the case. Despite the large measurements, it is a comfortable watch due to the curved design and slim depth of just under 9mm.
The case is formed of two pieces with the front and the hinged back which secures in place well. The front has the slim surround which allows the dial to take centre stage. It has a subtle curvature which allows it to flow into the flat sides. To the top and bottom are the wire lugs which are original and strong. To the right-hand side is a well-fitting, thin crown, which is a replacement.
The top of the case is curved, as is the bottom, which makes this a very comfortable fit to the wrist. Inside the back is signed with the British hallmarking from London assay office for silver. The date letter ‘n’ dates the watch to 1928/29. It also has the makers mark for George Stockwell, who was a renowned importer of Swiss watches into the UK.
The movement is an unidentified, but usual and quality 16 jewel Swiss lever calibre. It has the gilt finish which is bright and eye-catching. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to within -30 seconds per day, with an amplitude of 295 degrees and a beat error of 1.8 m/s.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
