Here we have an exceptional Art Deco piece of design dating to 1929. This is a Zenith 8 day desk clock of the ball design, with a flawless pink guilloche enamel casing that is absolutely mesmerising and shimmers in the light. It measures 57mm x 57mm and has the brass inner casing with chrome plated bezel. It is bezel wind and is also bezel set by popping the front out with the circular section to the rear. The silver dial has the satin finish with subtle linear brushing. It has a classic railroad track with the bold Arabic numerals and luminous in-fill. The hands are of cathedral style and have the thermally blued finish which catches the light. Inside it makes use of a modified Zenith pocket watch movement, with the addition of the large barrel for the 8 day power reserve, and further adaptations for the winding and setting.

They normally fit within a brass cradle that holds them. This is lacking the cradle, but it sits on a small wooden stand which holds it securely and shows off more of the case.

Reluctantly as collectors we sometimes have to let a special piece go on the market. This is one of those occasions for me. This has been in my personal collection for years and has brought me a lot of joy.

The front of the ball clock has the stepped chrome plated brass surround. The chrome plated finish has worn slightly with age, which is due to the use of the bezel to wind and set the clock. The dial is the silver satin tone, with the subtle linear brushing. It has the classic railroad minute track to the exterior, with the bold Arabic numerals in the black outline. The numerals are in-filled with the luminous paint which has aged handsomely to a darker tone. Below 12 o’clock is the Zenith name in the black text. To the base of the dial is the ‘Switzerland’ stamping.

The hands are of the Cathedral style with the bright thermally blued tone, which catches the light. They have the complete luminous in-fill, which has also darkened with age.

The enamel casing is in unblemished condition, which is remarkable for the age. It has the Guilloche finish which is simply mesmerising, shimmering in the light and offering a unique experience whenever it catches the light.

To the rear is the enamel painted button with the thermally blued screw to the centre and brass boarder. It is marked with the Zenith name and patent with three stars. This button is depressed to push the face and bezel out, allowing it to be turned to set the time.

Inside is the ingenious modified Zenith pocket watch movement. It has 15 jewels and is marked as being adjusted to three positions. It has a series of modifications to allow it to be used in this ball clock. It has the adjusted winding system which allows it to be wound via the bezel. It also has the large barrel arbour for the 8-day mainspring, which sits on top of the calibre. Luckily for any potential buyer, our watchmaker worked on it and serviced it, meaning they have a better understanding than most on how it functions. It is keeping very accurate time for the age, to within 5 seconds variation per day! The serial number is 2807548, which dates it to 1929.

There are other examples of this ball clock design by Zenith. Some have Cloisonne, some have floral designs and a select few have the guilloche enamel work like this. We have never seen another pink example; the only other guilloche example was purple with the serial number 2807647, just 99 different to this example.
