The 9ct gold case is an excellent size, measuring 30.5mm in width without crown and 30.5mm long. The lug-to-lug measurement is 35mm, which makes this watch very well proportioned for the era. It barrel shape spills over the wrist and looks exceptional. It is a Dennison Watch Case and has English hallmarking for 9ct gold, assayed at Birmingham assay office. It has the date letter E which dates to 1929/1930.
The blue enamel bezel is original and is in excellent condition for the age. The Arabic numerals are stylised in an exuberant Art Deco font. The tone is even across the enamel finish and it is rare to see such a good finish after 90 years. This matches with the thermally blued hands and makes this watch stand out.
The crown is original and is a great size and shape, being formed of gold. It has a lovely coin edge finish. This is just another excellent standout feature on this watch.
The dial is in excellent original condition. It has a cream base tone, which has well designed tracks. The minute track fits the barrel shaped case and follows the blue enamel curvature. The sub-second dial also matches this shape and has clear 10 second denominations. The minute track shape is matched by another barrel shaped box in the centre which creates an excellent coordinated design. The dial is signed Waltham U.S.A at 12 O’clock.
The hands are original. They are thermally blued Spade style hands. They are in good condition with no bending and minimal corrosion. The thermally blued finish is a bright blue in the light.
The strap is correct for the age of the watch. It is an expanding strap by Excalibur. It has the Patent number 860662 and is 9ct gold filled with a metal core. It has the model number 49. It is in good condition and flexes correctly to stretch. The gold-filled finish is also in very good condition.
The movement dates to 1924 and has the serial number 24690131. It is of good quality, having 15 jewels. It also has gold chatons securing the jewels. The finishing on the bridges is typical of Waltham with an intricate pattern.
The movement has been recently serviced.
It has a daily loss of -10 seconds, with an amplitude of 299 degrees and a beat error of 0.4 m/s.
