For sale we have a rare and potentially unique piece of design. Enamelled watches became popular during the 1920s and 20s, in the Art Deco period. Watches became more ornate and enamel was a fantastic way to express yourself via your timekeeping accessory.

This particular dial is signed Rotary, with hallmarking for 18ct gold, with the Poincon de Maitre for Eric Monnier of La Chaux de Fonds. There is another mark inside the case which has not been identified.

This watch has a wonderful case which is formed of 18ct yellow gold. It has a very warm yellow tone which is pleasing to the eye. It has a floral engraved boarder, whilst the corners are decorated with butterflies. These butterflies are filled with light and dark blue enamel which creates a striking piece of design.

The case is well proportioned at 24mm x 30mm, making this watch suitable for a gents wrist, or a ladies wrist. At the time this would have been a gents watch, which makes it all the more unique. The restored dial is signed Rotary and has wonderful gold tone applied Arabic numerals.

The movement is a 15 jewel swiss lever calibre, which is manual wind. It has been recently serviced and is in good condition cosmetically, keeping acceptable time for a watch of this vintage. It has a daily loss of -130 seconds, with an amplitude of 220 degrees and a beat error of 1.1 m/s.

Dial:

The dial is in very good condition. It has a white powder base tone. It would appear to have been restored to a high standard. The giveaway is the sub-second tracks fit to the original inset circular section on the dial. The numerals are original though and are very nicely designed and stylised Arabic numerals. These are applied and add texture to the dial. The layout of the dial is as expected for the era, with a simple railroad track for minutes, with a matching square sub-second dial. The dial is signed Rotary below 12 O’clock, with Swiss made below 6 O’clock.

Hands:

The hour and minute hands are mismatched replacements. They are in good condition with no bending and minimal corrosion. They have a thermally blued finish which has a good shine. The sub-second hand is thermally blued and appears original.

Glass:

The glass acrylic crystal appears original. It has light surface scratching. Overall, it is in good condition.

Crown:

The crown appears to be original matching the profile of the watch and the size. It is a gold tone.

Case:

The front of the case is a stamped design made of 18ct yellow gold. It has a floral engraving pattern running along the face of it, with each corner flanked by a buttery fly. The butterflies have light and dark blue enamel in-fill which brings them to life and is the standout feature of this watch. The top of the case is in good, original condition. It has light surface scratching consistent with age. The enamel finish has some wear to the tips, as expected with ageing, but it is original.

The sides of the case are flat, with a polished finish. There is dimpled denting to the bottom of each side of the lug. The hinge for the back to open is in good condition.

The movement sits within a spacer, inside of the case. This ensures the dial sits neatly.

Caseback:

The case back is 18ct yellow gold and is in good condition, with light surface scratching. It is signed with the serial number 42736. It is also stamped 18k. The inside of the case back is signed with swiss hallmarking for 18ct gold.

Strap:

The watch is on a new leather strap, designed for fixed lugs. It has been glued in place. It is a 14mm lug width and will fit up to a 7.5” wrist diameter.
