Here we have an exceptional piece of Haute Horlogerie from Breguet. Purchased in 2015, this is the Breguet Classique reference 5907 with power reserve indicator. It is formed of 18ct yellow gold and has the elegant 34.5mm diameter with a slim depth of just over 7mm. The case has the straight lug design and the intriguing coin edge finishing to the sides.
The silvered dial is formed of 18ct gold and is coated in silver, with the standout engine turned guilloche finish to the centre. The hands are of the classic Breguet style with the bright thermally blued tone which catches the eye. To the rear is the thin gold surround with The hallmarking and reference signing. It has the sapphire crystal exhibition back, which allows you to admire the beauty of the movement. The movement is the Breguet calibre 511DR. It is a 24-jewel manual wind movement which features a power reserve function on the movement itself. It has an impressive 96-hour power reserve and operates at a frequency of 21,600BPH.
It was based on the Frederic Piguet calibre 15, which was then heavily modified with higher grade finishing to fit Breguet’s standards.
The decision to confine the power reserve indicator to the movement is a master stroke. It allows the dial to maintain symmetry and elegance.
The watch is presented on its original Breguet Alligator strap with 18ct yellow gold buckle.
It is a full set which comes with the fitted delivery cardboard box, blue outer box, Italian wooden handmade inner watch box, signed guarantee booklet, model booklet, Breguet owners record letter and distributers booklet.
The watch was purchased on 13/03/2015 at NV Slaets in Antwerp.
The wooden box is one of the finest we have seen. It was handmade in Italy by Gentili Fabrizio Srl.
The brand:
Breguet were founded in Paris in 1775 by Abraham-Louis Breguet. They are one of the oldest surviving watchmaking brands and a pioneer of numerous watchmaking achievements such as the tourbillion, the first self-winding watch and the first wristwatch.
The company was owned by the English ‘Brown’ family from 1870-1970. Edward Brown was a prominent factory manager who acquired Breguet from Abraham-Louis’ grandson, Louis-Francois.
During the turbulent times of the Quartz crisis in the 1970s and 1980s, the company changed hands several times. Chaumet closed the French factory in 1976 and moved production to Vallee de Joux in Switzerland. The brand was then acquired by Investcorp, before its eventual purchase by Swatch Group in 1999.
Breguet have traditionally been the choice of royalty and politicians with notable wears including Marie Antoinette, Queen Victoria, Napolean and Sir Winston Churchill.
Antique Breguet pieces regularly set records in auctions world-wide. They are without a doubt one of, if not the most, important watch companies in history.
The watch:
Breguet state “The Classique watch is directly inspired by the work of A. L. Breguet. It embodies the principles with which he revolutionised watch design: purity of form, harmony of proportion and clarity of information, reflecting the ordered beauty of the movement within. Its features are the hallmarks of the Breguet style, from its finely-fluted caseband to its hand-engraved guilloche dial. With its strong personality, your Classique represents the ideal face of time.”
The 5907 was first introduced in the early 2000s and has been part of the catalogue until 2025. It is a modern watch which is executed to perfection. It has the unmistakable hallmarks of Breguet and haute horolergie with the beautiful engine turned guilloche dial, the blued steel hollow hands and the gold case with coin edge finish to the sides.
Abraham-Louis Breguets original designs were the source of inspiration, with this form of watch designed by Daniel Roths hand in the 1970s, helping to revive the brand.
Sadly, the modern Breguet Classiques lose the restrained proportion and associated elegance, favouring larger dimensions. This makes these neo-vintage examples something of an intriguing offering when considering Breguet. With the last known retail value sitting at 14,500 Euros, they also represent something of a steal on the pre-owned market.
When considering this, and the fact that the pendulum has swung towards dress watches, this represents a good time to pick up such a beautiful watch.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
