This is a good example of the Santos Galbee reference 2961. It is from the 1980s, being unisex size at 29mm x 29mm.It wears larger than these strict dimensions as it has a lug-to-lug measurement of 41mm. It has a two tone Stainless and 18k gold case. The one-piece case is Stainless Steel, whilst the bezel and bracelet screws are lovely 18k gold accents. The dial is the classic glossy white dial, with black Roman numerals and date window at 3 O’clock. The hands are of the Sword style and have a beautiful thermally blued tone. The classic notched crown sits on the side, with the facetted sapphire inset within the face of the crown. The mix of brushed and polished finishes on the case defines the standout design, drawing the eye to different aspects. The rear of the case back is signed: Cartier, AC 23.80 gr OR 0.750 4.05 gr, Automatique, with the serial number 2961XXXXX

 

The watch comes on its original Cartier Stainless Steel and 18ct gold screw bracelet. It has an 18mm lug width. It is signed Cartier, with the Cartier logo on the clasp. The bracelet will fit up to a 8” wrist diameter. It is in good condition. It has the code C0736651. It has a good brushed finish.

The movement inside is a Cartier 077. It is an automatic movement, with a jewel count of 25. It has a hi-beat frequency of 28,800 and a 38 hour power reserve. It is keeping time to within +18 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 290 and a beat error of 0.1 m/s.

Bezel:

The bezel is in very good condition, particularly when it comes to the even and bright colour of the blue.

 

Dial:

The dial has a glossy white base tone. This is the classic Cartier Santos dial with Black roman numerals and a simple railroad minute track. The dial is well balanced with a date window at 3 O’clock. The dial is signed Cartier below 12 O’clock, with Swiss made below 6 O’clock. The Roman numeral at 7 O’clock has the Cartier signing making up the V. It is a very good dial, with no noticeable marking.

 

Hands:

The hands are original and of sword style and are in very good condition. They have a thermally blued finish which shines in the light.

 

Glass:

The crystal is the original Sapphire crystal. It is in very good condition with no noticeable marks.

 

Crown:

The crown is the original Cartier crown. It winds and sets as it should and is in excellent condition. It has the cut Sapphire set in the end.

 

Bezel:

The bezel is 18k yellow gold and is in good original condition. It has some light surface scratching as expected with age. It has not been polished. The screw heads are in good condition with only slight marking to the mirror polished finish.

 

Case:

The case is made of Stainless Steel and measures 29mm wide x 29mm long, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 41mm. It is in good condition, having been lightly re-finished in the past. It maintains subtle traces of wear from its history with some slight dints to the case side. There are light surface scratches consistent with wear. The top of the case has a brushed finish, whilst the sides are polished.

 

Caseback:

The caseback is solid as the case is made of one piece. The main face has a brushed finish. It also has a polished finish falling away from the main face. There are some light surface scratches.

It is signed: Cartier, AC 23.80 gr OR 0.750 4.05 gr, Automatique, with the serial number 2961XXXXX

 

Strap:

The watch comes on its original Cartier Stainless Steel and 18ct gold screw bracelet. It has an 18mm lug width. It is signed Cartier, with the Cartier logo on the clasp. The bracelet will fit up to a 8” wrist diameter. It is in good condition. It has the code C0736651. It has a good brushed finish.

 

Movement:

The movement inside is a Cartier 077. It is an automatic movement, with a jewel count of 25. It has a hi-beat frequency of 28,800 and Incabloc shock protection. Its base calibre is the ETA 2671. The movement has good quality finishing with a Cartier engraved Rotor with stripped finishing. The movement also has perlage finishing.

The movement history is unknown, but it appears to have been well kept and regularly serviced. The movement is very clean. It is keeping time to within +18 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 290 and a beat error of 0.1 m/s.
