Here we have an incredible retro Omega watch which combines form and function. A chunky steel design with a highly accurate, state of the art movement. Dating from 1974 this is an Omega Megaquartz f2.4 MHz reference 398.0836. It has the unusual circular dial with the rectangular gap taken up by the black finish to the rear of the glass. It has the chapter ring with the minute track, with the baton hour marks set to the main face, both in bright white. It is signed with the constellation model, with the ‘megaquartz f2.4MHZ’ signing. The glass is signed ‘Marine Chronometer’ to the top, with the ‘Omega logo to the bottom right and logo to the bottom left. The hands are of stick style with the light brown tone and luminous in-fill.
The Stainless-Steel case is formed from a solid block. It is a large watch, measuring 32.7mm x 49mm. It has the polished screwed on bezel. The case is a beautiful canvas for the brushed finishing. The serial number plaque is set to the bottom of the front of the case. The original bracelet reference 1209/202 is fitted to the watch, creating the integrated flow. The case back is held in place with four screws and has the clear Omega logo. Inside it is signed with the reference 398.9836. The movement is the Omega Calibre 1511 Megaquartz movement which originally had a yearly variation of just 12 seconds. It is an officially certified ‘Marine Chronometer’.
The Omega Megaquartz movement utilised a Quartz crystal which oscillated 2.4 million times per second (2.4 MHz). The high frequency, along with other ingenious design features, enabled it to achieve a monthly variation of one second. Its sibling ‘Marine Chronometer’ with the same movement, is still the only watch to hold the title of ‘certified marine chronometer’.
It was the first watch to possess the TSA (time second adjustment) to enable the hour to be changed independently from the minutes and seconds, alongside a separate pusher for setting seconds.
The production figures were quoted as 9000 pieces. However, correspondence with the observatory at Besancon details certified example figures at 5682.
The bezel was only on the marine chronometer, with the bezel and movement serial number plaque formed of 14ct gold. This is an uncommon French market example where the gold was replaced with stainless steel as French law required visible hallmarks on any gold aspects.
An incredible retro design, combined with one of the most accurate movements ever produced. A true piece of horological history and a real icon.
