Here we have a circa 1974 Lemania Chronograph reference 5012 which has the 38mm aluminium case design, which is PVD coated. It has the bi-directional rotating bezel with the black dial signed with the ‘Philip Morris’ logo. It has the luminous baton hour markers with the detailed 1/5th of a second track. At 9 o’clock is the constant seconds, with the 12 hour counter at 6. At 3 o’clock sits the day/date window. The hour and minute hand are painted white to the tip with the black base, with the luminous in-fill. The bright orange central second hand has the tapered finish, with the central arrow minutes counter underneath. To the right is the crown, sandwiched between the PVD coated pushers. The case back is stainless steel and has the original plastic covering. Inside the case is signed as the reference 11002-1. The movement is the Lemania calibre 5012 which is a 17 jewel automatic movement. It has been recently serviced and is functioning well, with a daily variation of +15 seconds.
The history:
The watch was made by request for Philip Morris, parent company of Marlboro, for their Malboro/McLaren F1 racing team, being the official watch of the team.
The watch was gifted to former F1 journalist David Ray, who had close links to the Marlboro McLaren team at the time. A selection of memorabilia from his collection went on sale with Clarks Auctions in Cornwall at the beginning of 2025.
1974 was an incredible year which saw the Marlboro sponsored McLaren Ford team win both the constructor’s championship and the drivers’ championship, with Brazilian driver Emmerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi’s teammate Denny Hulme contributed to the team’s first constructors’ championship. This was achieved in the famous M23 car which adorned in the Marlboro red and white, with the prominent sponsorship to the front. It was powered by the Cosworth DFV V8 engine.
The watch:
The dial is a matte black base tone with the clear, contrasting white signing. The exterior of the dial has the detailed 1/5th second track with the minute markers. The hour markers are of baton form with the aged luminous tone. The 12 O’clock marker is differentiated with the wider stance. To the base of the hour markers is the clear 5 minute interval signing. At 12 is the Philip Morris logo, in place of the Lemania signing. The constant seconds sub-dial is inset into the dial, with the contrasting grey tone and bright white signing. The 12 hour counter has the same grey tone with the bright orange hand. The day/date function sits at 3 o’clock with the white surround and bevelled window. The hour and minute hand are white painted with the aged luminous in-fill. The base is signed black which makes it disappear. The central second hand has the same black painted floating base, with the bright orange tip. The 60 minute counter sits underneath and has the arrow shape with the matching bright orange tone.
The case is well proportioned measuring 38mm x 37mm. It has a lug-to-lug measurement of just under 44mm with the 20mm lug width. The watch sits proud on the wrist with the 15mm depth. The case is designed to rise high for legibility. The design also sits flush to the bezel which protects it and makes it hard to accidentally move. The top of the case is flat, with the downturn to the top and bottom. There is the bevelled line to either side, separating the top from the flat case sides. To the right is the crown, with the PVD coated pushers flanking it.
The lugs are a short, stubby design. The rear of the case is subtly curved to help the watch meet the strap/bracelet. The case back is deep and dished, with the brushed finish. It has the 6 notches for opening with the original plastic film. Inside it is signed with the reference 11002-1.
The movement is the Lemania calibre 5012. It is a 17 jewel automatic movement. It displays the hours, minutes, small running seconds, 60s counter, 60 minute register and 12 hour counter. It also has the quick set day/date. Hacking seconds are useful for accurate setting.
It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within + 15 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 300 degrees and a beat error of 0.4m/s.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
