This is a rare circa 1971 Omega Constellation Megaquartz ƒ 2.4 Mhz Prototype. It is an early preproduction P3 prototype Constellation Megaquartz, of which approximately six are known to be in private collectors hands. Estimated total production is around 10-20 examples. They gave them to office staff to wear, who would report back on comfort, fragility, timekeeping and other criteria.
The dial is simple with the grey/blue anodised finish, with white printed ‘Constellation’ below 12 o’clock and ‘Omega Megaquartz 2.4MHz above 6 o’clock. At 12 o’clock is the red Omega trapezoid shield, which is on all early Megaquartz pieces. It has the metal baton hour markers with the white painted centre. The minute track is also in the white print with single second markers. The date window is located at 6 o’clock with the white plastic date wheel. The hour and minute hands are white painted with the luminous in-fill. The central second is of tapered design with the white finish. It has the signed Omega crown to the right-hand side, with the seconds adjustment pusher below.
The watch has a heavy and large bespoke truncated pyramid case, measuring 36mm wide by 46mm long. It has the brushed sunburst finish to the bezel, with the case back secured in place by four large screws. There is no signing to the rear of the case back, or the inside.
Inside is the Omega calibre 1510 movement, which remains very close to the marketed version. It has the prototype serial number 00003864.
The Megaquartz technology was the haute horlogerie of the time. Ground-breaking, this marked the birth of the most accurate wristwatch in the world. The Megaquartz 2400 was indisputably the most accurate and the most technologically advanced wristwatch in the world.
The first watches were introduced to the market in 1972 in a standard version (with the calibre 1510) and in 1974 in the “Marine Chronometer” version (with the calibre 1511).
The design of these movements is thanks to the Battelle engineers Jakob Lüscher for the electronics and Peter Döme for the mechanics. Its unmatched precision of one second a month is around ten times greater than of an ordinary quartz watch. This precision results from a specially designed tiny disc-shaped resonator sealed in a capsule, which vibrates at the incredible rate of 2 359 296 times a second. It took a decade to achieve similar results with thermocompensated quartz calibres.
Production numbers were very low, with the 1510 f2.4MHz Constellation Megaquartz having an estimated total production of around 1000-2000.
