Here we have a clean and classic 1970s Garrard 9ct yellow gold presentation watch. It has the 34mm 9ct case which is English made. The silver sunburst dial catches the eye and has the applied baton hour markers, with the baton style hand set and central seconds. The well sized date window is placed at 6 o’clock. To the rear of the case is the presentation engraving from Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd to ‘J Tickle’ for 30 years service, 1976. The case has the hallmarking for 9ct gold from London assay office and the David Shackman & Sons maker’s mark. The movement is the MSR S76 automatic movement calibre, which is keeping accurate time. It is watch only, with no paperwork.
This was a presentation watch which reminds us of one of the major companies in 20th century Britain. Imperial Chemical Industries was a British chemical company who for a long time, were the largest manufacturer in Britain. It was formed as a merger of four leading British chemical companies. It was a blue-chip titan which innovated in products such as Perspex, Polythene and Dulux paint. By 1894 the company was the first UK firm to earn over £1bn in pre-tax profits. They employed tens of thousands of people at their peak.
The dial is a clean and classic design with the silver base tone and the satin sunburst finish. The sunburst radiates in the light, catching the eye. The hour markers are applied and are of baton style. They have the notched finish which alternating gold and black stripes. The markers are slightly larger at 9, 12 and 3 to help differentiate the quarters. The date window is set at 6 o’clock and is well sized. It has the gold frame to the outside with the bevelled window. The date wheel is white with the black Arabic numerals. The dial is signed with the ‘Garrard’ name below 12 o’clock with the ‘Automatic’ text above 6. Below the date windows is the ‘Swiss movement’ signing. The hands are of the baton style, matching the hour markers. The hour and minute hand have the black stripe to the centre, also tying in with the markers. The central second hand is a neat, tapered design.
The case is neatly proportioned, measuring 34mm x 34mm. It has the lug-to-lug length of 41mm which adds presence on the wrist. It has a neat depth of 10mm with the 18mm lug width allowing a well sized strap. It is formed of 9ct gold and has the polished finish. The lugs are the thin and straight design with the bezel having a slope to meet the straight case sides. To the right-hand side is the gold-plated crown, which appears original. The case back is dished and has the presentation engraving to the face. Inside it has English hallmarking for 9ct gold from London assay office, with the date letter “B”, dating the watch to 1976. It is signed DS&S which is the makers mark for David Shackman and Sons.
The movement is a MSR S76, which is an improved and decorated ETA 2783. It has a sweep second hand, date with quickset and hacking. It has 21 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 BPH and a power reserve of 45 hours. The service history is unknown, however the movement is in good condition keeping very good time. It has a daily gain of +10 seconds, with an amplitude of 260 degrees and a beat error of 0.1m/s.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
