For sale we have a neat and nicely designed dress watch by Bulova from the 1960s. It measures 34mm x 34mm and has a 9ct gold Dennison case with a notched bezel and straight lugs. The silver sunburst dial with applied logo and hour markers is neat with some ageing. Inside is a calibre 11 ALC movement from Bulova with is keeping good time.

Such a model was likely assembled in Handsworth, Birmingham. Brands would export bare movement to the recipient country and allow authorised dealers to case the movements in local cases. The rationale behind this was to avoid costly import fees on cased watches from Switzerland.

The circular case is formed of 9ct gold and is in good condition. There is a thin notched section which surrounds the dial and holds the crystal. The top of the case is flat and circular. The lugs are straight and add to the presence of the watch. There is a notch to the side of the case which recesses the crown slightly.

The case back is formed of 9ct gold. It is English made by Dennison. It is in average condition, with surface scratching consistent with ageing. Inside it has English hallmarking for 9ct gold from Birmingham assay office, dating it to 1967.

The dial is in average original condition, with an even patination. It has a silver satin sunburst base tone, of classic 1960s dress watch style. It has three-dimensional baton hour markers, which taper towards the end. They are gold tone and are nicely finished, with larger double markers for 9,12,3,6. The dial is signed Bulova in a three-dimensional applied gold tone. The dial is signed Swiss to the base. There are signs of age to the dial, with speckled blemishes to the satin dial finish.

The hands are original and are of a Luminous Dauphine style in a gold tone. The crown appears to be original and has a neat coin edge finish.

The strap is genuine leather in a black tone and is designed for 18mm lug width. It will fit from a up to an 8 inch wrist diameter.

The movement is a Bulova calibre 11ALC. It is a 17 jewel movement, which is manual wind with sweep seconds. It has a frequency of 18,000 BPH and a power reserve of 46 hours. The movement is in good condition. It has a daily gain of +17 seconds.
