Here we have a beautifully clean 1966 Record 9ct gold pocket watch. It is a thin, dress pocket watch with the elegant 9ct gold case with the polished finish. To the top of the case is the bow which has the sharp pentagon shape with the coin edge crown sitting below. The dial is the bright silver tone with the satin finish. It has the dash minute markers with the facetted arrow hour markers. The quarters have the applied Arabic 9, 12 and 3 with the cut off 6. Below 12 o’clock is the Record signing with the inset sub-second dial set above 6 o’clock.

The hands are the index style in a gold tone. Inside the case has the Record name with the Swiss hallmarking and British import marks, dating to 1966. The movement is the Record calibre 203 which is a well finished manual wind movement. It has been recently serviced and keeps accurate time.

By the 1960s the pocket watch had declined in popularity and ceased to be a regular wear for most people in society. They were seen as something for a special occasion and the pocket watches that were produced crystalised the essence of class, becoming thinner and cleaner than historic designs. This Record perfectly exhibits this clean dress design.

The dial is the silver satin tone which has a subtle shine. The hour and minute hands are of the index style in the bright gold tone. The minute markers to the exterior are simple dashes with the hour markers being the facetted arrows in the bright gold tone. There is a beautiful balance to the dial with the Arabic numerals at 9, 12 and 3 with the cut off 6. The hour markers are applied to the dial which provides a depth a texture. Below 12 is the simple ‘Record’ signing with the sub-second register intersecting the 6 o’clock marker. The sub-second register is inset to the dial and has an eye-catching texture with the grained concentric circles which have the sunburst in the light. The theme of simple dash markers continues here with the sub-second hand having the clean lollipop design.

The case measures 46mm wide and has a slim depth of 11mm, making this a more compact dress pocket watch. It is an open face pocket watch with the three-piece case construction, having the snap-on bezel and case back. The bezel is thin with the bevelled edge. The centre of the case extends out and has the pointed edge. The case back mirrors the front with the bevelled polished edge, with the face having the linear brushed finish. To the top of the case is the clean Pentagon bow which is reminiscent of Art Deco period designs. This has the UK assay office import marks which are clearly defined. The crown has the neat design with the coin edge finish.

The inside of the case back has the Record branding with the ‘Zema’ stamping for the case maker. It has the Swiss hallmarking for 9ct gold as well as the London assay office import hallmarking, which dates it to 1966.

The movement is the Record calibre 203 which is a good quality manual wind, Swiss lever movement, with a jewel count of 17. It is finished to a high standard with the jewels set in chatons and the Geneva striping to the bridges. It has been serviced in the past couple of years and continues to keep accurate time.
