For sale we have a beautiful Rolex Datejust. Dating to 1965, this is a Reference 1601 with Stainless case and white gold fluted bezel. It also has a ‘Non-Lume’ linear brushed pie-pan dial. This reference tends to have a sun-durst dial finish and the linear brushing is less common and a very interesting texture. This dial variation was also made without lume plots, despite the ‘T SWISS T’ signing to the foot of the dial. This is beneficial with time due to the fragility of the lume. The watch can be worn without the worry of loose lume under the crystal.
The acrylic crystal is original with date magnifier, as is the screw down Rolex crown. The watch has drilled lugs, with a brushed finish to the top and polished sides of the case. In-between the lugs it is signed Registered Design 1601 at 12, with the case number 1277247 at 6. To the rear is the coin edge screw back with brushed face. Inside is the 1601 reference signing and the IV 65 date code. The movement is a calibre 1560 automatic chronometer grade, which has been recently serviced.
The watch comes with a period 11.00.2 Green leather box, with correct matching outer box. The watch has no paperwork or bracelet.
It’s easy to wax lyrical about such a classic watch. The Datejust is one of the most loved and iconic watches ever made. First released in 1945, it has remained a timeless watch with its instantly recognisable design, high quality finishing and functional sporty use. Dress it up or dress it down, jeans and T-shirt or evening meal. This is an ideal start if you are venturing into the vintage watch world. It is also an unusual dial variation which would be at home in a discerning collection. That’s the beauty of the variety within the Datejust range.
