For sale we have a stylish 1961 Omega Seamaster dress watch, steel with gold capped top. It is the reference 14762-61, with a 34mm case and a beefy lug design. It has an excellent dial, with a brushed finish to the centre, cross hair and pie pan esque raising of the centre. It has eye-catching facetted arrow hour markers and a date window at 3 O’clock. To the right is a later replacement Omega crown and to the rear is the screw back case with Seahorse motif. Inside is the rose gold finished Omega calibre 562 automatic movement, which looks great and is functioning very well. This gold capped reference provides the luxury appearance of gold, without the high price tag. The same reference has previously sold via Hodinkee.
This is the classic, everyday vintage dress watch.
The case is well proportioned measuring 34mm x 34mm, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 43mm adding to the presence on the wrist. At a depth of 11mm, the case is very comfortable on the wrist, especially when taking into consideration the taper of the lugs. The ‘beefy’ lugs are very well balanced with the circular central section of the case, with a slight inward taper allowing them to blend well. The Seamaster motif to the rear is very good, clear and defined. There is a light personal engraving of the initials P-L to the rear.
The dial is excellent and is simple yet dripping in luxury. The considered design touches really come to the forefront here. A raised central section of the dial, in the same vein as the pie-pan dials of the era, with a brushed finish and cross hair motif. This creates a range of textures and finishes to interact with the light. This is further aided by the facetted outer section of the dial being a satin finish, allowing the applied facetted gold arrow markers to take centre stage. This is neatly balanced with the facetted gold tone date window surround. The Dauphine hands are simple and elegant, a classic on Omegas of this era.
Inside is the Automatic Omega cal 562. It has a jewel count of 24, with sweep second and has a date function. The date is set by cycling between 21hrs-24hrs. It has a frequency of 19,800 BPH, with a 50-hour power reserve. The rose gold tone finish is good and it is keeping time to +12 seconds a day.
