Dating to 1961, this is a well-proportioned and attractive watch from a good quality maker. The Stainless Steel Calatrava style case measures 35mm x 35mm with a 44mm lug width. The dial has a silver satin finish and has a lovely mix of Arabic and arrow hour markers, with the Longines applied logo and signing. The lume plots are neat below the hour markers. Inside there is a well-designed and good quality Longines cal 23ZS movement, keeping great time.
The case is circular with a notched bezel framing the dial. There is a lower stepped section to the top of the case, with the tapered lugs rising above this, matching the slope of the bezel. The lugs have a faceted finish to the outward turned flat sides. These run into a thinner notched side section of the case, before another flat section and bevel to meet the case back. From the side the case presents a triple sandwich layer, with the notched central section, which is appealing on the eye. This feeds into the taper line of the lugs.
The case back is stainless steel and is a screw back with a grained finish and polished main face. It is signed Longines, waterproof, antimagnetic, shock-absorber, swiss made. The inside of the case has perlage finishing. It is signed “Longines, Fab.Suisse, Swiss made, Acier Inoxydable”. It has the reference 1442 6995-3.
The dial is well balanced with the arrangement of the silver tone applied hour markers. There is Arabic 12, 3, 6, 9, and arrow hour markers in between. Each hour marker has a radium lume plot to the base on the minute / second track. The remainder of the minute / second track has small dashes as markers. The dial has a silver tone applied Longines hourglass logo below 12 O’clock, with original black Longines signing above. The dial is signed Swiss Made below 6 O’clock.
The hands are original. They are sword shaped and are silver in tone. They have an aged lume in-fill to the centre. They have a polished finish which shows little signs of corrosion. The central second hand is also original and in good condition.
The acrylic crystal is a new replacement and is in perfect condition. The crown is a replacement that is chrome plated and has suffered pitting with age.
The movement is a calibre 23ZS from Longines. The movement is manual wind with Incabloc shock protection, sweep second hand, 17 jewels, a frequency of 18,000 BPH and a power reserve of 44 hours. It has the serial number 11,645,147 dating it to 1961.
The movement is in good condition both cosmetically and in terms of function.
Service history is unknown, but the time keeping and other figures are very good. It has a daily loss of -19 seconds.
