Here we have a 1958 Omega Seamaster calendar with the uncommon 34mm 18ct rose gold case. It is the reference 2849 SC which has the beefy lug design and press fit back with a stunning, detailed Seamaster Hippocampus to the centre. It has an aged silver tone dial with the applied, rose gold tone facetted arrow hour markers. Below 12 is the applied rose gold Omega logo and the signing below. Above 6 is the stylised Seamaster text with the ‘Calendar’ script below. The hands are of luminous Dauphine style in the rose gold tone with the tapered rose gold tone central second hand. To the right-hand side is the original rose gold tone clover crown with Omega logo. The case back has the ‘Seamaster’ text to the top and ‘waterproof’ to the bottom. Sandwiched between is the stunningly detailed Seamaster motif, which is rarely seen on 18ct cases. The inside of the case is marked with the reference 2829 SC with the Swiss hallmarking for 18ct gold and Serva SA case makers hammer. The movement is the automatic calibre 503 which is shockproof, with 20 jewels. It has been recently serviced and is keeping very accurate time.

Mid-century Seamaster’s in 18ct gold cases are a lovely sight. Mid-century Seamaster’s in 18ct rose gold cases are rather uncommon and an absolutely stunning sight. We love this rose gold example because of its warm glow, which is tempered by the light dial. The rose gold accents to the dial are a triumph with the facetted arrow markers and the classic Dauphine hands. Every touch is considered with the rose gold tone Clover crown catching the eye. The rear of the case features the finest Seamaster motif we have seen. Beautifully textured and well defined, it is a joy to look at.

The dial on this example is a silver tone which has developed a speckled patination and bubbled lacquer with age. It provides a simple base for the hour markers which provide the main talking point. They are a beautiful facetted arrow design in the rose gold tone. They are applied to the dial, providing a pleasing texture and depth. There is a subtle balance to the markers with the quarters having the double facetted design, with balances with the date window at 3 o’clock. The original luminous plots are present to all the markers and they have developed the aged tone. The classic applied Omega logo sits below 12 in the rose gold tone with the black ‘Omega Automatic’ signing. Above 6 we have the stylised ‘Seamaster’ font, which is a classic feature within this period, with the ‘Calendar’ text below. The hands are the classic luminous Dauphine style in the rose gold tone. The luminous in-fill to the centre is original with the aged tone. The central second hand has the elegant, tapered design.

The case is well proportioned measuring 34mm x 34mm. The beefy lugs extend the total lug to lug length to 43mm which adds to the presence on the wrist.

The case is formed of 18ct rose gold and consists of 3 sections with the snap-on bezel, central piece with lugs and the snap-on case back. The bezel has the classic broad flat design associated with this era of Seamaster case. It has the polished finish with the thin bevel to the edge which flows to meet the flat sides. The lugs extend from the case and have a real presence with their wide ‘beefy’ stance. They appear from the front to be added onto the case due to the cut-out line for the bezel. They taper inwards and downwards towards the wrist. To the right-hand side is the original rose gold tone Omega signed crown, which is of the clover design. To the underside of each of the lugs on the left-hand side there are the hallmark stamps which are well defined.

The case back has the dished edge and flat face. The exterior has the polished finish and is signed to the top with the ‘Seamaster’ name and ‘Waterproof’ to the bottom. The flat face to the centre has the circular brushed finish which neatly frames the beautifully detailed Seamaster Hippocampus motif. It is a design not commonly seen on the gold cases of the period and is well preserved which makes it even more of a joy to look at and feel.

Inside it has the instruction ‘Fit washer in back’ which is a common feature in this period to aid the seal. It is signed with the Omega name and is marked with the reference 2849 SC. It has the Swiss hallmarking for 18ct gold with the head of Helvetia stamp. It also has the hammer number 352 for the case maker Serva SA. They produced high quality gold cases for the premium Omega lines (Constellation and Seamasters) from 1947-1965.

The movement is the Omega calibre 503 which is an automatic movement. It has a jewel count of 20 and benefits from shockproofing. It is a robust and reliable calibre, and we particularly enjoy the classic rose gold tone finishing from the period. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to within -5 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 305 degrees and a 1.8 m/s beat error.

The watch is presented on a genuine lizard strap which matches nicely with the case tone. The buckle is a modern rose gold plated aftermarket Omega logo buckle, of the same big logo design as the original 1950s buckle.

The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.

Dial:
The dial is original and is in decent, patinated condition. It is a silver base tone which has aged to a cream tone with the speckled patina and bubbling to the lacquer. It has the black signing to the dial which is in good, unworn condition. The hour markers are applied and have slight oxidised tones in parts but no corrosion. The original luminous plots are present and nicely aged.

Hands:
The hands are original and are in good condition with the rose gold tone. The luminous in-fill is original and complete, with the darkened tone. The central second hand is original but has historic corrosion marks.

Glass:
The acrylic crystal is the original with the Omega etching to the centre. It is in good condition with a light stress mark between 8 o’clock and the ‘Seamaster’ signing.

Crown:
The crown is original and has the polished finish with the clear Omega logo. It maintains the bright rose gold tone and functions well.

Case:
The case is formed of 18ct rose gold and is in strong condition for the age. It has some light surface scratching associated with age. There is a small dent to the left-hand side, towards the top of the middle section of the case.

Caseback:
The back is in good condition with no signs of poor opening. The ‘Seamaster’ and ‘Waterproof’ signing to the top and bottom is well defined, as is the brushed finish the centre surrounding the motif. The Seamaster motif is very well defined.

Strap:
The watch is presented on a genuine lizard strap. The buckle is a modern rose gold-plated aftermarket Omega logo buckle. The strap will fit any wrist size.
