Here we have a beautiful 1956 Rolex Oyster Precision reference 6422 in the 34mm Stainless Steel Oyster case. The 6422 is a time only variation, which provided a canvas for beautiful dial designs and finishes. This example has the ‘Oyster Precision’ quarter Chevron dial, with the applied Arabic 3-6-9, applied Cornet logo and arrowhead markers. It is a less common ‘no lume’ variation, with no luminous plots set within the arrowhead markers, and the clean, polished lance alpha hands. It has the thermally blued central second with the lollipop counterbalance. It is a classic oyster case with the polished bezel and brushed finish to the top of the case. To the right is the screwdown crown with the Cornet logo. The coin edge screw back is good with the polished finish. The movement is the manual wind Rolex calibre 1210. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within chronometer standards.

The dial is the standout aspect of this lovely 1950s Rolex reference. It is the Chevron dial with the crosshair split, separating the textured Chevron quarters. This is one of the best finishes seen on a vintage Rolex in our view. The hour markers have the applied Arabic 3-6-9 explorer layout, balanced with the Rolex cornet logo at 12 O’clock. In-between the quarters are the arrow head hour markers which catch the light beautifully. Around the outside is the simple dash minute track. Below 12 is the ‘Rolex Oyster’ signing with the ‘Precision’ text above 6 O’clock. To the base, the dial is signed ‘Swiss’.

The dial is a very well executed and faithful restoration. The original finish had significant ageing, wear to the track and discolouration. We don’t like to do it, but in this case the result is so good, it was very worthwhile.

The case measures 34mm x 32.75mm with the 37.5mm width including the screw down crown. It has a good lug-to-lug measurement of 42mm which gives the watch a good presence on the wrist. The profile is slim at just 10mm including the box crystal.

It is the classic Oyster case, formed of Stainless Steel. It has the polished bezel with the brushed finishing to the top of the case. The sides have the polished finish. To the right is the original screw down crown with the Rolex cornet logo. The rear of the case has the brushed finish, whilst the coin edge skewback has the polished finish. Inside it is signed with the Rolex name and the reference ‘6422’. It is marked with the date code ‘III56’.

The movement is the Rolex calibre 1210. It is manual wind with a jewel count of 17. It operates at a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It also benefits from shock proofing. It has been recently serviced and is keeping very good time to within +/- 3 seconds a day, with a strong amplitude of 310 degrees and a beat error of 0.1m/s.

This dial variation also featured on the Rolex Oyster-Perpetual Explorer, Super precision. Ref 5500.

The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
