Here we have a 1955 Omega Seamaster with the 34mm stainless steel case. It is the reference 2849-1SC which has the beefy lug design and press fit back with washer inside. It has the refinished black matte dial with gilt signing, and the gold tone applied arrow hour markers. Below 12 is the applied Omega logo and the signing. Above 6 is the stylised Seamaster text with the ‘Calendar’ text too. The hands are of Dauphine style in the gold tone with the tapered central second hand. To the right-hand side is the original clover crown with Omega logo. The case back has the ‘Seamaster’ text to the top and ‘Waterproof’ to the bottom. The inside of the case is marked with the reference 2849-1SC. The movement is the calibre 503 which is automatic. It has been recently serviced and is keeping very accurate time.

We value transparency as a retailer and want you to know what is an isn’t original to a watch. The dial on this example has been restored to a high standard with the mate black base tone and gilt signing. There is one flaw, the Swiss Made text is either side of 6 o’clock (1960s placement), not at the base of the dial.

With this disclaimer out of the way I do have to say that it is a very good looking and well executed restoration overall.

It is the matte black dial which has the gilt signing. To the exterior are the dash minute/second markers with the thicker markers on the quarters. It has the applied hour markers which are absolutely stunning. They are the facetted elongated arrow design, with the standout double facetted arrows to the quarters, balancing with the date window at 3. The date window has the rounded raised framing with the white disc with black numerals. Below 12 o’clock is the applied omega logo with the gilt Omega ‘Automatic’ text below. Above 6 o’clock is the stylised ‘Seamaster’ text with ‘Calendar’ below. The hands are the classic Dauphine style in the gold tone with the central second hand having the elegant, tapered design.

The case is well proportioned measuring 34mm x 34mm. The beefy lugs extend the total lug to lug length to 42.25mm which adds to the presence on the wrist.

The case is formed of stainless steel and consists of 3 sections with the notched bezel, central piece with lugs and the dished snap-on case back. The notched bezel is round with the polished finish, which falls away from the edge of the dial to meet the sides of the case. There is a subtle bevel before it meets the sides which is a neat touch. It holds the low profile domed acrylic crystal in place, protecting the dial. The ‘beefy’ lugs extend from the case and have a real presence with their wide stance. They appear from the front to be added onto the case due to the cut-out line for the bezel. They taper inwards and downwards towards the wrist. The sides appear to have the central band with the bezel and back meeting it. On the right-hand side is the original clover style crown with the Omega signing.

The case back has the polished finish with the dished edge and flat face. It is etched to the top with the ‘Seamaster’ name and ‘Waterproof’ to the bottom. Inside it has the instruction ‘Fit washer in back’ which is a common feature in this period to aid the seal. It is signed with the Omega name and is marked with the reference 2849-1SC.

The movement is the Omega calibre 503 which was one of Omegas first non-bumper automatic movements. It has a jewel count of 20 and has the bi-directional rotor. It also has detached manual wind and features the date function. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to within +5 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 300 degrees and a 0.1 m/s beat error.

The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
