For sale we have a 1953 Tissot Stainless Steel cased, gents “Cat Ear” lug watch. It is the reference 6746-1 and it has a beautiful silver dial with engine turned finish, applied logo and hour markers. Inside it has a calibre 27B-21 movement, which is manual wind, with a sweep central second. It has been recently serviced.

The dial is the party piece of this watch, alongside its lug design. It has a silver satin finish, with a raised sector to the centre. This has the Tissot logo applied in a gold tone. It is thick, with a mirror polished finish that adds a pleasing texture and depth. The outer sector of the dial has an engine turned finish, with further eye-catching applied arrowhead markers. They are mirror polished and play with the light. It bounces off the watch as you turn your wrist. There are raised gold dot minute/second markers which further add to the texture of the dial. It is signed Swiss Made to the base below 6 O’clock. The facetted Dauphine style hands were very commonly used on dress pieces of the 1950s. They are an elegant design, which catch the light with the facetted centre. The sweep central second hand is neat and straight.

The case is Stainless Steel and has a diameter of 32mm x 32mm. Its lug design is eye-catching and adds to the watch’s presence with a measurement of 38.5mm. At 10mm deep it is a comfortable watch to wear, sitting flush to the wrist. The lugs have a slight taper downwards to accommodate the snug fit to the wrist.

It is a clean and considered case design with the polished notched bezel, sitting proud above the lugs. The lugs are notched outward from the top and bottom of the case, with the unusual and attractive “cat ear” triangular styling. They have a sharp curve which makes them appear less sharp than the inner angle appears. To the right-hand side is the original crown which is of a domed design with a coin edge band around the base.

To the rear is the screw back which has neat engraving of the Tissot name, boasting its anti-magnetic, waterproof and shock resistant properties. Inside it is signed with the Tissot name and marked as Stainless Steel. It has the reference 6745 6746-1 engraved too.

Inside is the Tissot calibre 27B-21 movement. It is manual wind, with a jewel count of 16. It has a frequency of 18,000 BPH and a 44-hour power reserve. It is a very accurate and reliable movement. Having been serviced, It’s keeping time to +12 seconds a day.

A very pleasing and unusual Mid-Century watch from Tissot. It has the subtle design cues that remind us why we love vintage watches. The creative flair of a given period creates horological works of art that we can enjoy today, transporting us to another era.
