For sale we have a rare and beautiful piece of design. This is an Eterna-Matic Golf pocket watch from 1953. These were mainly marketed in America and are an excellent example of clean Mid-Century-Modern design. They were originally $75 dollars in 1953.

Designed primarily for golfers, by also for Sportsmen, this was a pocket watch designed to showcase the beauty and ingenuity of Eternas Automatic movement. It has an exhibition case back to allow you to see the automatic movement which was made In-house by the company in 1953. This was the best technology of the time, and this was why they wanted to show it off.

Its ingenuity and design allowed it to be equally at home with business wear too, as claimed in the advert. A rare breed, the sports dress pocket watch! With such outstanding and clean mid-century-modern design how could you not love this.

The dial has a silver lacquered finish which appears slightly pearlescent in the light. There are applied silver tone three-dimensional arrow hour markers, with double marker at 12 O’clock. To the base the hour markers have circular lume plots, with squares at 3, 6, 9 and a triangle at 12 O’clock. These are all in excellent original condition and have aged to a lovely pumpkin tone. The dial has the applied Eterna logo below 12 O’clock and is signed Eterna-Matic.

The hands are original in a silver tone. They have the original lume in-fill which is in good condition. The second hand has the original red painted tip which is in good condition.

The case is Stainless Steel and is in very good original condition. The case has a polished finish. The shape of the case resembles a flying saucer, which is a nod to its classic Mid-Century-Modern design. The neat loop is a subtle touch to the case, whilst the signed crown sits neatly on top. The screw case back is Stainless and has light surface scratching. It has notches for opening. The rear exhibition crystal is in perfect condition, allowing you to enjoy the movement.

The movement is a Eterna cal 1414U. This is a 17 jewel movement which has shock-proofing, Antimagnetic properties and was sold as having an unbreakable mainspring. It has been recently serviced by us. The movement is in good condition for its age cosmetically and is keeping time very well to within -12 seconds a day.
