Here we have an exceptional circa 1952 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometer in the 18ct yellow gold Genex semi-bubbleback case, marked as the reference 6084. It has the uncommon and exceptional silver non-luminous dial with the applied pencil hour markers and double marker at 12. To the right hand side is the gold Super Oyster crown, which was used between 1951 and 1953. Between the lugs, the model reference and case serial and visible. The rear of the case has the unworn hallmark with the semi-bubbleback case back with the defined coin edge. Inside it has the Swiss hallmarking and Rolex name with the reference. The movement is the Rolex calibre 630 which is chronometer grade. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
We can comfortably say that this is one of the cleanest mid-century Rolex watches you will see. The dial is a rarely seen nonluminous variation with the outstanding applied pencil hour markers, with double marker at 12. This creates a supremely well-balanced dial, which combined with the condition, makes this one of the finest we have seen. It is a dial reminiscent of that on the Patek Phillipe Calatrava reference 2526, which was released just one year after.
The dial is the silver base tone with the satin powdered finish. It is a remarkably well-preserved dial which has developed only a very light cream patination with age. Its condition is due to its time spent in Southern California, known for its abundant sunshine and low humidity. The dial layout affords space to the exterior with the detailed minute/seconds track with graduations down to 1/5th of a second. The pencil hour markers are applied on the dial and have the polished finish which has a beautiful golden shine. At 12 O’clock is the differentiated double marker which sits above the applied Rolex cornet logo. The Rolex name proudly sits on the dial with the beautifully proportioned serifs. Below this is the ‘Oyster Perpetual’ model signing. Above 6 o’clock is the ‘Officially certified chronometer’ text with the ‘Swiss Made’ signing to the base of the dial. The hour and minute hands are of the leaf style with the thin tapered central second hand, which has the lollipop counterbalance.
The case measures 34mm wide with a 36mm width inclusive of the crown. It has a total lug to lug length of just under 40mm which adds presence on the wrist. The 19mm lug width also allows a well sized strap which further increases the presence. The semi-bubbleback design leads the case to sit at 12.5mm deep.
Formed of 18ct yellow gold, this is a triumph of a case. Surrounding the dial is the smooth bezel which playfully interacts with the light, reflecting it as you turn your wrist. The lugs are the tapered design with the subtle downturn towards the wrist. The top of the lugs have traces of the original brushed finish remaining. To the right-hand side is the ‘Super Oyster’ crown which was introduced for a short period of time, between 1951 – 1953. It was developed as an alternative to the traditional ‘Oyster’ screw down crown, which was patented in 1926. The original ‘Oyster’ crown had decades of success and marketing behind it, which led to people resisting the change. This is the reason for the short-lived run for the ‘Super Oyster’, making it something of a collectable feature on early 1950s Oysters.
To the left-hand side of the case are the drilled lug holes, which are well formed, with little wear. Between the lugs at 12 o’clock the reference number is visible, with the serial number between 6 o’clock.
The rear of the case has the brushed finish, with the hallmark well defined to one of the lugs. The case back is the semi-bubbleback design with the polished finish and the sharp coin edge finish. Inside it has the circular brushed finish and is signed with the Rolex logo and the reference 6084. It has the Swiss hallmarking for 18ct gold with the head of Helvetia. It has the Geneva key No.12 which is for the case maker Genex, who were a quality maker of gold Oyster cases for Rolex.
The movement is the Rolex calibre 630, which is chronometer grade. It is an automatic movement with the bi-directional rotor which has a jewel count of 17. It features the sweep central seconds hand and is still an accurate timekeeper. It has been recently serviced and has a daily variation of under 7 seconds per day.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference
