This is a well-proportioned and neat Movado dress watch measuring 33mm x 33mm, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 40mm. A true classic 1950s design, this 9ct gold circular case is polished and bright, whilst the dial has a softer silver base tone which catches the light well. The hour markers draw attention to the dial, with arrow markers and Arabic 9,12,3, similar to an explorer dial layout. The use of the applied Movado logo and signing at 12, balanced against the simplistic crosshair sub-second dial, adds perfect balance to this dial. Inside of the well-made 9ct gold case is a top quality 17 jewel Movado calibre 125, keeping exemplary time (-5 seconds a day). The watch sits on a NOS Movado strap, which is a good fit, but slightly too small for the lugs.
The bezel is 9ct gold and snaps onto the main body of the case. It holds the crystal and is in good condition with a polished finish. There is light surface scratching on the case but no denting. The main body of the case also has a polished finish and is in good condition. The lugs are built into the centre section of the case.
The case back is 9ct gold and is solid. The inside of the case back has English hallmarks for 9ct gold, assayed at London assay office. The watch dates to 1952, with the date letter “C”.
The dial is in good original condition, with a silver base tone. There is some light speckling to the base finish of the dial, but this represents a neat patina.
The dial has minute markers graduated around the outside, with thicker markers for the hours. There are applied gold tone arrow hour markers, with Arabic 9, 12, 3. This represents a very neat explorer style dial layout. The sub-second dial is minimalistic with a cross hair and baton second hand. The dial is signed Movado with the applied Movado logo at 12 O’clock and Switzerland at 6 O’clock.
The hands are original and are in good condition with no bending and minimal corrosion. They are of facetted Dauphine style.
The crown appears to be original and functions as it should. It has some wear to the gold plate.
The watch is on a NOS Movado strap, which is a bit small at 16mm, with this watch having an 18mm lug width.
The movement is marked 0194 Movado Factories, but is a calibre 125 by Movado, as marked under the balance wheel. It has 17 jewels, is manual wind with sub-second, a frequency of 18,000 BPH and a power reserve of 46 hours. It was used from 1946-1961.
The movement is in good condition cosmetically, keeping very good time for its age. It has a daily loss of -5 seconds, with an amplitude of 304 degrees and a beat error of 0.2 m/s.
