For sale we have a neat and elegantly designed dress watch, produced by Majex of Switzerland. The watch dates to the 1950s and is of a classic dress style, with a 28mm 9ct gold case and clean silver/white dial with Arabic numerals and sub-second dial. It has thin horn lugs, which add to the elegant nature of the case. It has a good quality manual wind movement from Pierce, which is a lovely rose gold tone. It has been serviced and is running well. Despite originally being a gents watch, the watch is on the petite side, making it suitable for a lady’s wrist, or a gent used to small watches.

 

Majex were a Swiss manufacturer which were retailed through Marchand & Jobin in London. They were good quality Swiss watches, featuring reliable movements from makers such as Pierce and ETA.

 

Inside the case is British hallmarking for 9ct gold from Birmingham assay office. It has the date letter “C’ which puts the watch as dating from 1952/53.

 

The watch is in very good condition, with the dial having no obvious signs of ageing.

Dial:

The dial is in good condition for the age and is original. It has no signs of wear or marking.

 

Hands:

The hands are original and of Feuille style. They are thermally blued. They are in very good condition with no bending or corrosion. The thermally blued tone is bright.

 

Glass:

The acrylic crystal is in very good condition with no obvious marking.

 

Crown:

The crown is original, with wear to the gold plating.

 

Case:

The case is formed of 9ct yellow gold and is in good condition with surface scratching. It has a polished finish with a good shine. The case back is solid, with the movement being front loaded, held in place by the gold bezel and crystal. The horn lugs are thin, but in good condition with no bending to the wire lugs.

 

Caseback:

The solid case back is formed of 9ct gold. It is in good good with a polished finish and light surface scratching associated with ageing. It has marking associated with rubbing against a single piece strap.

 

Strap:

The watch comes on brown genuine leather strap in good condition for fixed lugs.

 

Movement:

The movement is an Eclipse 10.5’’’, which was later known as a Pierce cal 103. It is marked 103 under the balance. It is manual wind and has a jewel count of 15, with a power reserve of 40 hours.

 

The movement has been serviced. It’s keeping time to -20 seconds a day, with an amplitude of 270 degrees and a beat error of 2.9m/s.
