For sale we have a very good example of a 1957 Smiths De Luxe dress watch, in a 9ct gold SCW case. It has a two-tone sector dial which is in excellent original condition. Inside is a 17 jewel 27.CS movement which has been recently serviced.
The circular case is formed of 9ct gold and measures 32mm x 32mm with a lug-to-lug measurement of 40mm. It has a polished finish. The lugs taper to follow the curvature of the case and curve downwards slightly. They are very nicely designed and add to the presence of the watch on the wrist. The case back is formed of 9ct gold with a polished finish. Inside it has English hallmarking for 9ct gold from Edinburgh assay office, with the date letter “B” dating it to 1957. It is signed SCW and has the serial number 46514.
The dial is in good original condition. It has a dark cream outer tone with a lighter cream central section. The minute track consists of dashes on the edge of the central sector. The hour markers are around the outside of the dial and alternate between arrow markers and Arabic numerals. These are three dimensional and are applied in a gold tone. These add texture and balance to the dial. The dial is signed Smiths De Luxe with crown logo below 12 O’clock, with the Made In England signing below 6 O’clock.
The hands are original. They are of a unique faceted sword/alpha style in a gold tone. The central second hand is also original with a red arrow pointer to the end.
The crown appears to be original and has a neat coin edge finish. It has wear to the gold plated finish.
The movement is a Smiths calibre 27.CS. It is manual wind, with a jewel count of 17. It has a sweep second hand, a power reserve of 41 hours and a frequency of 18,000 BPH.
