For sale we have a very good example of a 1956 Smiths Deluxe in a 9ct gold Dennison case Reference 12897. The dial has a beautiful guilloche finish with dice and daggers applied hour markers. It has a Made in England Smiths calibre 27.CS inside with classic gold tone and frosted finish. It has a Bristol script presentation engraving to the rear in good condition. These watches can apply to all departments of the Bristol company; Bristol Motoring, Aviation and Engineering. This is a good collectors quality example.
The dial is in excellent original condition. It is a desirable dial with guilloche finishing, with its beautiful textured and engraved pattern. The applied gold tone hour markers are of dice and daggers design. These add further texture and balance to the dial. The dial is signed Smiths De Luxe with cornet logo below 12 O’clock, with the Made In England signing below 6 O’clock and 17 jewels.
The circular case is formed of 9ct gold and is in good condition. It has light surface scratching consistent with age. It has a polished finish. The lugs taper to follow the curvature of the case and curve downwards slightly. The case back is formed of 9ct gold. It is in good condition, with surface scratching consistent with ageing. It has a polished finish. It has a personal engraving “Bristol H.Firth 1958”.
Inside it has English hallmarking for 9ct gold from Birmingham assay office, with the date letter “G” dating it to 1956. It is signed Dennison and has the case reference 12897 and the serial number 787616.
The hands are original and are of a unique faceted sword/alpha style in a gold tone. The central second hand is also original with a red arrow pointer to the end. They are in good condition with slight signs of corrosion.
The crown appears to be original and has a neat coin edge finish. It has wear to the gold plated finish.
The movement is a Smiths calibre 27.CS. It is manual wind, with a jewel count of 17. It has a sweep second hand, a power reserve of 41 hours and a frequency of 18,000 BPH. The movement is numbered JC409598. The service history is unknown, however the movement is in good condition keeping good time. It has a daily gain of +40 seconds, with an amplitude of 235 degrees and a beat error of 1.1m/s.
This is a lovely example of British watchmaking from the best period, the mid 1950s.
