For sale we have a lovely 9ct gold JW Benson square dress watch from the late 1950s, with a sweep central second hand.

 

The dial is in average original condition. It has spots of ageing and a larger mark from 2 – 4 o’clock. It is a silver base tone with a satin shine to the middle. The outer section of the dial is a light cream tone with a satin finish. The inner section of the dial is square, allowing the case to frame the dial nicely. The square seconds track is clear and has Arabic markers for each 5 second graduation, with 1/5th second graduations. It has Arabic numeral hour markers and is signed JW Benson beneath 12. The stick style handset is thermally blued and is original. The central second hand is nicely designed, with a large arrow base shaped tail.

This is protected by the acrylic crystal which is original and is in good condition with some light surface scratches.

 

The case is nicely proportioned measuring 26mm x 26mm, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 35mm. The case is 9ct gold, with rose gold undertones. It has a polished finish which is in good condition. It has short, sharp lugs which have fixed bars formed of gold which are in good condition. The case back is also formed of 9ct gold and snaps into place, sealing tightly. It is marked with the serial number 2178. Inside it has British hallmarking for 9ct gold from Edinburgh assay office, with the date letter “T”, dating the watch to 1949/50.

Inside is an early variant of the A Schild calibre 1239. It has an early form of shock protection, a jewel count of 17, and a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It has a power reserve of 37 hours. This is a pleasant looking movement which is in good condition. It has a daily loss of --30 seconds, with an amplitude of 260 degrees and a beat error of 0.6m/s.

The hour markers are Arabic numerals in a black tone. The dial is signed JW Benson London below 12 O’clock and Swiss Made below 6 O’clock.

 

Hands:

The hands are original. They are of stick style and are thermally blued. They are in good condition with the blue tone shining nicely in the light. There are some spots of corrosion to them. The central second hand appears to be original. It is nicely designed, with a large arrow base shaped tail.

 

Glass:

The acrylic crystal is original and is in good condition with some light surface scratches.

 

Crown:

The crown appears to be original and has a neat coin edge finish. It has some light surface scratches but is in good condition.

 

Case:

The square case is formed of 9ct gold and is in good condition. It has light surface scratching consistent with age. The case has a polished finish. The lugs are short and have a fixed bar, instead of spring bars. The lugs are in good condition, free of bending.

 

Caseback:

The case back is formed of 9ct gold. It is in good condition, with surface scratching consistent with ageing. It has a polished finish. It has the serial number “2178”. It is snap on, fitting into place with pressure.

 

Inside it has British hallmarking for 9ct gold from Edinburgh assay office, with the date letter “T”. This dates the watch to 1949/50. It is signed B.W.C. London Made.

 

Strap:

The strap is genuine leather and is open ended for fixed lugs. It will fit from a up to an 8 inch wrist diameter. 

 

Movement:
