For sale we have a beautiful example of a 1948/49 9ct gold JW Benson cushion case watch. This is a well-preserved example with excellent aged Radium lume.
The case measures 29mm x 29mm, which makes it mid-size. Although originally a gents watch, is suitable for a female wrist too. It is a neat cushion case which is formed of 9ct gold. The cushion case is a classic design, popular in the 1940s. It is versatile and has stood the test of time, to remain a very desirable design. The case back has the personal engraving: “Presented to W.L. Hewitt by the directors of Chesterfield Tube Co. LTD. To commemorate 25 years good service with the company, 1924”. Inside it has English hallmarking for 9ct gold from Birmingham assay office, with the date letter “Y”. It is signed J.W. Benson LTD, made in England.
The dial has a silver base tone with a satin shine. It is a lovely simplistic dial which has aged to perfection. There are simple minute markers around the exterior, with large and well-formed Arabic numerals. These have applied Radium lume on them which has developed a lovely orange tone and adds texture to the dial. The sub-second dial is inset.
The hands are of syringe style and are thermally blued. They are in excellent condition and the blue tone shines nicely in the light. The original radium lume is intact and has aged to a lovely orange tone.
The movement is an FHF calibre 150. It has 15 jewels and is manual wind. It has a frequency of 18,000 BPH and a power reserve of 44 hours. The ratchet wheel is marked JW Benson London. It has a daily gain of +50 seconds, with an amplitude of 210 degrees and a beat error of 3.0m/s.
Dial:
The dial is in very good original condition. It is a silver base tone with a satin shine. It is a lovely simplistic dial which has aged to perfection. There are simple minute markers around the exterior, with large and well-formed Arabic numerals. These have applied Radium lume on them which has developed a lovely orange tone and adds texture to the dial. The sub-second dial is inset and has simple markers for the seconds, with Arabic numerals for the 10 second graduations.
Hands:
The hands are original. They are of syringe style and are thermally blued. They are in excellent condition and the blue tone shines nicely in the light. The original radium lume is intact and has aged to a lovely orange tone.
Glass:
The acrylic crystal is a replacement and is in good condition with no marking.
Crown:
The crown appears to be original and has a neat coin edge finish. It has some light surface scratches but is in good condition.
Case:
The cushion case is formed of 9ct gold and is in good condition. It has light surface scratching consistent with age. There is a shallow dent the left hand side. The case has a polished finish. The lugs are thin and have a fixed bar. The lugs are in good condition, free of bending.
Caseback:
The case back is formed of 9ct gold. It is in good condition, with surface scratching consistent with ageing. It has a polished finish. It has the personal engraving: “Presented to W.L. Hewitt by the directors of Chesterfield Tube Co. LTD. To commemorate 25 years good service with the company, 1924.

Strap:
The strap is genuine leather and is open ended for fixed lugs. It will fit from a up to an 8 inch wrist diameter.
