Here we have an outstanding 1947 Omega bumper automatic, with the well sized 35mm stainless steel and the standout rose gold capped top. It is the reference 2479-5 which is rather uncommon. It has the two-tone sector silver dial with the circular brushed exterior and linear brushed centre. The Arabic numerals are an eye-catching font with the original aged luminous. It has the bronze tone syringe hand, also with the aged luminous. The sub-second dial is inset with the grained concentric circles and dash markers. The rose gold capping is bright to the top, with the brushed stainless steel to the sides. The Domed crown is original, but the plating has worn. The case back screws into place and has the reference signing inside. The movement is the Omega calibre 30.10 RA PC which is a bumper automatic. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
The dial is one of my favourite aspects of the watch. The large case size (for the era) and relatively fine bezel, allows the dial to take centre stage. It has the sector layout and makes use of the two-tone finish. The outer ring has the lighter, circular brushed silver finish. It has the speckled patination which is even and pleasing. The hour markers are of the unusual Art Deco font, which combined with the aged luminous paint creates a beautiful texture. The central section has the railroad minute track to the exterior with the thicker markers on the hours/5 minute graduations. The centre is a different silver tone with the subtly brushed linear finish. It is signed below 12 o’clock with the Omega logo and name, with ‘Automatic’ signing. The sub-second register is also well sized and is inset into the dial. It has the grained concentric circles which catch the eye with the radial sunburst. It has the dash hour markers with larger dashes on the 5 second markers.
The hands are of the skeletonised syringe style in the bronze tone, with the original luminous paint to the centre. This has developed the darkened ageing which matches the hour markers. The tapered sub-second hand is original, also in a bronze tone.
The case is very well-proportioned measuring 35mm x 35mm. Including lugs it has a 42.5mm length which makes it very wearable by modern standards.
It has the rose gold capped finish to the bezel and the tops and outside of the lugs, which is a wonderful warm tone. It is uncommon to see rose gold capping during the period and this makes it a desirable example. Alongside the bevelled bezel, it has the notched sculpted lugs which add flair the case. To the right is the domed Omega crown which is original but has lost its rose gold plating. The sides are flat with the brushed finish, with the lugs swooping downwards to fit the wrist neatly. The rose gold capping stretches over the sides of the lugs, differentiating them on the side profile. The drilled lugs allow easy strap change and they are well formed, with little wear.
To the rear is the stainless steel screw back with the six notches. The face has the brushed finish matching the sides and the rear of the lugs. Inside it has the Omega logo with the ‘patent’ signing and ‘Acier Staybrite’ for stainless steel. It is also marked with the reference 2479-5.
Inside is the Omega calibre 30.10 R.A. PC. It is a 17 jewel bumper automatic calibre, which has a beat rate of 19,800 BPH. It has the classic rose gold tone finish from Omegas of the period, which is good and bright.
The bumper automatic movement is a joy on the wrist, with the ability to feel the audible bump as it bounces off of the springs.
The movement has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within 20 seconds variation per day, with an amplitude of 250 degrees and a beat error of 0.5m/s.
The watch is modelled on a 7" wrist circumference.
