Here we have a 1946 Eterna watch with the well sized 35mm full stainless-steel case. The dial is the gilt black finish, which is a well-executed restoration. To the exterior is the dash minute track with the gilt Arabic numerals infilled with the luminous paint. Below 12 o’clock is the Eterna name with the subtly in-set sub-second register at 6 o’clock. It has a classic railroad track with the original lollipop hand design. The hour and minute hands are the index style with the more recent luminous in-fill. The case is well sized for the era at 35mm and is formed of full stainless steel. It has the thin bezel with the flat case sides and interesting subtly flared curving lugs. To the right is the chunky original crown. The case back snaps on and has the brushed finish with clear serial number. The movement is the manually wound Eterna calibre 852C. The service history is unknown, but it is in good condition with a daily variation of within -20 seconds.
We love the 35mm case diameter, which offers a sweet spot on most wrists. The full steel case construction, curved lug design and chunky original crown make the watch a joy to engage with. The black gilt dial is historically restored, but well matched to original examples. The robust and reliable Eterna calibre 852C is increasingly collectable.
We would like to clearly state that the dial is a well-executed, historic restoration. It is black gilt dial with the ground finish, that offers brown tones in direct light. To the exterior is the simple dash minute track with the bold dashes for the 5-minute graduations. The Arabic numerals have the gilt base with the luminous in-fill. They are a bold and legible design, key in any military style watch. Below 12 o’clock is the Eterna name and above 6 o’clock is the subtly inset sub-seconds register. It has the classic railroad track with the 5 second dashes and Arabic numerals to the quarters. The hand is original and is of the lollipop style. The hour and minute hands are also original and are of Index style. They have the more recent luminous in-fill which has a lighter tone.
The case is well sized with a 35mm diameter and a 41mm lug-to-lug length. This is in our eyes, an ideal size for a legible, everyday companion.
It is a full Stainless-Steel case with is circular with the thin bezel surrounding the dial. It has a high and flat design with the straight case sides creating a thick appearance, despite its depth of just 10mm. The lug design is particularly interesting, seeming to flare outwards with the curving, polished design. The sides of the case are flat and have the brushed finish which helps the case appear more substantial. To the right-hand side is the chunky crown for ease of use, which appears original. The case back has the brushed finish and polished edge, with the clearly defined serial number to the main face. Inside it is signed with the Eterna name and ‘Acier Inoxydable’.
The movement is the Eterna calibre 852C, which is a robust and reliable manually wound movement with a jewel count of 15 and shockprotection. The service history is unknown, but the watch is keeping accurate time to within -20 seconds variation a day, with an amplitude of 300 degrees and a beat error of 0.2m/s.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
