Here we have an absolute giant of a vintage watch. This 1941 Omega is known as the ‘Jumbo’ due to its oversized 38mm case dimension. It has the impressive case design with the thin bevelled bezel allowing the dial to take centre stage. The dial is the aged silver tone with dash minute markers and stylised Arabic numerals. Below 12 is the omega logo with the sub-seconds at 6 o’clock. The hands are thin with the thermally blued finish. The case is thin, with its tapered lug design which curves to fit the wrist. The snap-on case back has the brushed finish, with Omega signing and serial number inside. The movement is an Omega calibre 30T2 which is manual wind. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time. The watch comes on an uncommon 20mm lug width Expandro stainless steel expanding bracelet.
The watch has what may appear like a dent to the lower right lug. However, this is an import mark for the Portuguese market. This is often referred to a Salazer mark and is shaped like an Armadillo. It indicated that tax had been paid on a non-precious metal case.
The dial was originally silver and had aged to a speckled golden tone. It is well sized and clear with the dash minute track to the exterior. The Arabic numerals are in the art deco style, which has the curved topped 4 and flatted heights. Below 12 is the Omega name with the logo below. The sub-second dial is inset at 6 o’clock. It has the grained concentric circles which have a good texture and radiating finish.
The hour and minute hand are of the thin and neat stick style, in the bright thermally blued tone. The sub-second hand has the lollipop counterbalance and is the same blued tone.
The case is known as the jumbo due to its impressive 37.5mm width. It has a total lug-to-lug length of 45mm too. It does maintain a slim depth of 8.5mm which makes it a neat wear despite the large size.
It is the three piece case design with the snap-on bezel, central section with lugs and snap-on case back. The bezel is thin, allowing the focus to be placed on the large and clear dial. It has the bevelled edge which falls to meet the centre of the case. The lugs are long and elegant with the taper inwards and downwards towards the wrist. They have the drilled holes for the spring bars which are well shaped and secure. The lugs have the bevelled edge, before they flow into the flat brushed sides. To the right hand side is the thin and neat crown. The shallow dished case back has the lightly brushed finish. Inside it is marked with the Omega name and as being formed from Stainless Steel. It has the serial number 10,179,414 inside.
The movement is the Omega 30T2. It is a manual wind movement with a jewel count of 15. It is known as an accurate, robust and reliable calibre. It has been recently serviced and has a daily variation of +25 seconds per day.
The watch comes on an uncommon 20mm lug width Expandro bracelet. It is the reference 5116. It will comfortably fit up to 7.5” wrist diameter. It expands to fit the wrist with its sprung links.
The watch is modelled on a 17.75” wrist circumference.
