Here we have an impressive late 1940s early 1950s Chronograph watch by Timecraft, sold in the US market. It has a beautiful, oversized 36mm case diameter and is a full stainless-steel case. It is signed to the dial, case and movement. The dial is a clean silver satin with a light vertical brushing. It has the Base 1000 Tachymeter scale to the exterior in the blue text. The detailed minute/seconds track has 1/5th second graduations and has is set within an eyecatching silver ring. The hour markers are the bold Arabic style with the original luminous in-fill. Below 12 is the Timecraft name, with incabloc above 6. It has the two registers with constant seconds to the left and the 30-minute counter to the right. The hands are thermally blued, of syringe style with original luminous in-fill. The central second hand stands out with its red painted finish. The case has a polished finish with dished bezel and tapering bevelled lugs. To the right is the well sized original crown with the two chronograph pushers. The case back screws in place and is signed with the Timecraft name inside. The movement is a Landeron 51 which is hand wound and has shockproofing. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to within +10 seconds variation per day.

An impactful chronograph, with an effortlessly clean design and layout. Designed with size and subsequently legibility in mind, with a Tachymeter scale, this is a distinctive motorsport-oriented piece.

The case is a whopper for the era and is very much considered oversized. It has the 36mm wide case without crown and 38.5mm across, taking into account the crown/pushers. It has a lug-to-lug length of 44.25mm and a well sized lug width of 18mm.

The design of the case is simple at first glance, but there are many small touches that make up a considered and intriguing piece. The bezel sits proud of the main body of the case with its dished design. It holds the glass securely, sloping downwards, with the bevelled outer section, before meeting the centre of the case with a thin straight drop. The centre case sits wider, providing a canvas for the flat circular finish and offering a stepped design. The lugs angle downwards and taper inwards. They have the bevelled edge which widens towards the tip. The sides of the case are flat and have a brushed finish. To the right hand side it has the well sized crown with the knurled edge for ease of use. It is sandwiched between the classic pushers which are original.

The dial is a silver satin base tone with the subtle vertical brushing. To the exterior is the blue Tachymeter scale, which often has a motorsport association due to its use in measuring speed. It is based on a fixed distance or event, covering 1000 units (such as 1000 meters or 1 Kilometer). Inside is the eyecatching silver foil chapter with contains the minute/seconds track with the detailed 1/5th second graduations for timing. Clear Arabic numerals denote the hours. These have the aged luminous infill, which is original. Below 12 o’clock is the ‘Timecraft’ name with the ‘Incabloc’ text above 6. To the base of the dial is the ‘Swiss’ signing. The two registers are inset into the dial, providing a welcome depth. They also have the grained concentric circles which produce a sunburst finish that radiates in the light. At 9 o’clock is the sub-second register, with the 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock.

The hands are original and are of a hybrid index/syringe style with the bright thermally blued tone. They have the luminous in-fill which has darkened with age. The central second has is red painted with helps it to stand out for precision timekeeping. It has a curvaceous design before tapering to a neat tip. The sub register hands are both original with the thermally blued leaf design.

To the rear is the super clean case back which has the circular brushed finish with the radiating sunburst finish. It has the outer section with the 6 notches for opening, with the curved main face which is engraved with the specifics of the watch. Inside it has the further ‘Timecraft Watch Co’ signing and perlage finishing.

The movement is the Landeron calibre 51 which is a manually wound 17 jewel Chronograph movement. It benefits from Incabloc shock protection and hacking seconds. It uses a cam-switching system and the top pusher starts the chronograph, with the bottom stopping and resetting. It is signed with the Timecraft name and has the code ‘TOK’ which is the US import code for Timecraft.

It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to within 10 seconds variation per day, with an amplitude of 325 degrees and a beat error of 0.0 m/s.
