Here we have a standout circa 1940 Eterna wristwatch with the oversized 36.5mm steel case. It has a highly unusual rose gold capping to the outer section of the bezel. The dial is a well-executed restoration with a reverse Tuxedo layout with cream outer section and black centre. To the exterior it has the minute/second track with detailed 1/5th second graduations. It has the faux luminous hour markers with the dark orange tone in-fill. The centre of the dial is a black circle which has the ‘Eterna Super’ text below 12 o’clock. The hands are a silver tone with the aged tone luminous in-fill. The hour and minute hand are of Index style with an uncommon broad, luminous central second hand. The case is large for the era at 36.5mm and is formed of stainless steel with the dished bezel which has the rose gold capping to the outside. To the right it has a well sized crown with the knurled edge. The case back screws in place and has the three notches for opening. It is engraving with the Eterna name and the specifics of the watch, with the serial number. The movement is the Eterna calibre 852C which is a manually wound 15 jewel movement which is keeping accurate time.

We love the rose gold bezel surround, an uncommon touch which provides a warm hue. We also love the broad luminous central seconds hand, which is also an uncommon feature on such a central seconds watch.

It is important to note again that the dial is a well-executed restoration. It is an unusual layout with the reverse Tuxedo design, with the cream tone outer section and black centre. It has the minute/seconds track to the exterior with detailed 1/5th seconds graduations. The bold Arabic numerals display the hours with the faux aged dark yellow/orange tone. To the centre is the back circle with the white ‘Eterna Super’ text. The base of the dial is marked ‘Swiss’.

It has the silver tone Index style hour and minute hands, which were used on many of the larger Eterna watches during this period. They have the luminous in-fill to the centre in the aged tone. As mentioned above, it also has the ‘broad’ luminous central second hand for increased legibility. This is uncommon and early trench pieces and is even less common in 1940s watches. It makes telling the time at a glance significantly easier.

The case is considered oversized for the era, measuring 36.5mm wide without crown. With crown it is 39mm wide and the total lug-to-lug length is 44.25mm, making this an impactful vintage watch.

The case is formed of steel and is circular with the raised, polished bezel surrounding the dial. This has the unusual rose gold capping to the exterior which provides a beautiful warm hue. It has the polished lugs which curve down towards the wrist and taper inwards. They have the drilled holes for the spring bars which make strap removal easier. The sides of the case have the brushed finish which helps break up the watch. To the right-hand side is the well sized crown with the knurled edge and polished face. The case back is also formed of steel and has the three notches for opening. It is a dished design with the polished exterior and circular brushed sunburst finish to the centra. It is signed with the Eterna name, with the specifics of the watch and the serial number. The inside of the case back has the perlage finishing and is signed ‘Brevet+’ denoting the protected intellectual property of the case design.

Inside is the Eterna Calibre 852S which is a robust and reliable manually wound movement with a jewel count of 15 and shockprotection. The service history is unknown, but the watch is keeping accurate time to within +10 second variation a day, with an amplitude of 290 degrees and a beat error of 1.6 m/s.
