For sale we have a beautiful 1939 Mappin retailed Movado 9ct gold tank watch. It has a neat, square yellow gold case with a polished finish, with flat sides and neat tapered lugs. The original crystal is curved both ways, with the square silver dial beneath. It has neat Roman numerals and large baton markers. The sub-second is also square. It is neatly signed Mappin, with Movado below. The crown has a stylish coin edge and is beautifully designed. There is a personal engraving to the rear. The case has British hallmarking inside, with a manual wind Movado calibre 75 inside, marked with 4 adjustments. It is keeping good time.

 

The case has British hallmarking from Glasgow assay office, dating to 1939/40. It is also signed with the reference 91788. The case is marked with the 115 hammer, which is the poincon de maitre for A.& M. Favre & Perret. They produced cases for Patek Philippe from the 1960s. This also included manufacturing the Nautilus case reference 3700, and the ref 3940 from 1985-2003.

 

The personal engraving to the rear is ‘For Joey From Dad’. It is well engraved in a neat mix of bold and italic.

 

It comes with its original Mappin & Webb Ltd box, with brown velvet exterior and champagne tone satin cloth to the inside. It is signed ‘By appointment, Mappin & Webb Ltd. Oxford Street, London W’.

 

A beautiful double signed example with a stylish square case and eye-catching mix of elongated baton and roman numeral hour markers. With the quality Movado calibre 75 movement inside, this is a joy of a watch.

Dial:

The dial is original and is in average condition. It has a silver satin shine. It has some speckled dirt marks with age and other marks, with some scratches. It has wear to the finish in the top right corner. The signing is good and clear, as are the gold foil hour markers.

 

Hands:

The stick style hands are original in a gold tone. The sub-second hand is also original. There is some light corrosion.  

 

Glass:

The acrylic crystal is original and is in good condition with some light marks.

 

Crown:

The crown is original, nicely designed with a neat, curved coin edge finish.

 

Case:

The case is 9ct gold and is in good condition. The polished finish is good with only light surface scratching.

 

Caseback:

The 9ct gold snap on case back is in good condition. It has a polished finish and has light scratching and marking with age. It has a personal engraving.

 

Strap:

The watch comes on a new genuine leather strap.

 

Movement:

The movement is a Movado calibre 75. It is a manually wound movement, with a jewel count of 15 and a frequency of 18,000 BPH.

 

The movement service history is unknown, but it is in good condition. It’s keeping time to within +20 seconds deviation a day, with an amplitude of 275 degrees and a beat error of 4.6m/s.
