Here we a uncommon example of a Zenith pocket watch, dating to 1935. It has the retailer signing of Javaheri & Sons, a retailer based in Tehran, in Iran. Examples with co-signing from such markets are uncommon, particularly during the 1920s and 30s.
This Zenith pocket watch has a beautiful satin finished silver dial which shines in the light. It has the stylised arabic numerals with the inset sub-second dial.
The moon holds significant religious and cultural importance in Islamic culture. It serves as the basis for the Islamic calendar, marking the start of months and the timing of religious festivals such as Ramaden and Eid. It is only fitting therefore, that the hands are of Breguet (Moon) style, with the inclusion of the crescent design of counterbalance on the sub-second hand. They are a beautiful thermally blued tone which catches the light.
The loop is of stylised Art Deco style.
The case back is free of engraving. The case is signed with the Zenith logo inside, with the ‘Metal Blanc’ signing, which indicates the case is formed of white metal.
The inner case back is signed ‘Grand Prix Paris 1900’.
The movement is a typically quality Zenith movement from the period, with the jewels set in chatons. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within 20 seconds variation a day.
Javaheri & Sons were the only authorised dealer of Rolex in Iran. The business started in 1900 when the Javaheri brothers grandfather started importing watches. In the 1920s and 30s the family were also the agents for Zenith in Iran. Mr Javaheri’s side of the family still own the only two Rolex boutiques in Tehran. The other side of the family own Tehran Watch, which retailed brands like Audemars Pigeut and Cartier.
The Shah of Iran owned a lot of high end watches, with Rolex just one of the brands he collected.
