Please note the watch keeps good time on the wrist, but has a low amplitude of 135 and is erratic on the timegrapher, so a service is recommended.1935 Owen and Robinson LTD Leeds, 9ct Rose Gold watch shookproof, 22mm x 31mm. A beautiful Art Deco watch, with a lovely rose gold tone case. Hallmarked for London assay office 1935/36 with the date letter U. It has a well finished and highly interesting early ETA calibre with gold chatons around the jewels, an interesting cross hatch pattern on the bridges and a shock proof mechanism which is quite un-usual this early in watches development. This will have been an expensive watch at the time. The case was produced by: City Watch Case Co Ltd (Louis Arnould), Crown Buildings, Cox's Court, London EC1.
The watch was then retailed by Owen and Robinson LTD Leeds, who still operate today, stocking incredibly high end watches. The watch case and bracelet have been ultrasonically cleaned.
Dial:
The dial is in poor, original condition. It is a Light cream tone, with a silver ring in the inner section of the dial, which mirrors the case shape, making it a deliberate design feature.
It is signed with the "Owen & Robinson LTD Leeds" name at 12 o'clock, with "Unbreakable above the sub second dial.
The hours are indicated by Arabic numerals, alternating with baton markers, all of which are painted on in black. These are in poor condition and have worn and distorted overtime.
The minute track is worn. It is indicated the hours with a thicker black baton on every hour.
There is a sub-second dial which is clearer than most of the dial.
Hands:
The hands are un-bent and un-corroded. They are thermally blued and are original, fitting the margins of the watch well. The swords hands are a nice touch. The small second hand may be a replacement, although fitting the margins well, the colour doesn't match the minute and hour hands.
Glass:
The cut glass is in good condition, but has some misting in the bottom corners, perhaps due to the use of glue to stick it, in previous years.
Crown:
The crown is original and has a beautiful coin edge, fitting flush to the case. There is evidence of some wear of the rose gold plate colouration on the crown.
Case:
The case is in strong condition with only light surface scratches that are consistent with age. There are some deeper marks along with a slight marking where the case back meets the case. This is normal for gold cases as they are soft. A nice original case that hasn't been polished.
Case back:
Strong condition with multiple light surface scratches. There is a dimpling of the gold which can be seen clearly in the photos of the back.
Lugs:
The lugs are fixed and are in good condition, with equal thickness and no wear.
Strap:
The watches strap a flexible, rose gold coloured bracelet. This is marked "Excalibur 60, Pat No. 867154, 1/10th 12ct R.G.".
Movement:
Please note the watch keeps good time on the wrist, but has a low amplitude of 135 and is erratic on the timegrapher, so a service is recommended.
