For sale we have a 1935 9ct gold tank watch signed JW Benson London. It is a classic Art Deco tank, with its luxurious gold case and the dial with guilloche sunburst finish and exaggerated Arabic numerals. It has a polished 9ct gold tank shaped case, with gold wire lugs. The snap on case back is in good condition and fits together tightly. It has British hallmarking from London assay office. Inside is a 15 jewel Swiss lever movement, which has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
The dial seems to be a very well executed restoration. It has a good white/silver tone, with clear railroad track, rectangular sub-second dial and exaggerated Arabic numerals. It is signed ‘J.W. Benson London’, with ‘Swiss Made’ to the base. It has an excellent guilloche texture, with a sunburst finish which catches the light. The Breguet style hands are in good condition, with thermally blued finish. The sub-second hand also fits the margin of the track well.
The rectangular case measures 22mm x 32mm, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 37.75mm. It is a gents watch, which now is a neat dress wear. It is 9ct gold of a two-piece design, the front with the fixed bar lugs and the crystal. The rear is a solid back which holds the movement. It is hinged to the top and snaps together with the front. It has a lovely, bevelled design to the front. The flat surround of the glass extends to the top and bottom of the case, whilst the sides bevel to meet the flat case sides. The rear is flat, with a subtle curve which allows it to sit neatly on the wrist.
Inside, the case has British hallmarking from London assay office dating to 1935. It has the signing for the maker Nemitz & Vacheresse.
The movement is a 15 jewel Swiss lever calibre, which is manually wound. It has a frequency of 18,000 BPH and is functioning very well, having been recently serviced. It’s keeping time to within +60 seconds deviation a day, with an amplitude of 240 degrees and a beat error of 4.6m/s.
