Rone were a good quality Swiss manufacturer who produced watches from the 1920s up until the late 1970s, when they were one of the many casualties of the quartz crisis. In the 1950s Rone had a store on the Pentonville Road in London.
The case is of neat proportions measuring 47mm x 47mm, with a relatively slim depth of 11mm. The loop means the maximum case diameter is 58.5mm. The stem, crown and loop are of a rose gold tone which contrasts nicely with the silver case and bright dial. The case is of an interesting design, with an outer silver Dennison case, hinged to the front with solid back. Within this is the dial, stem, crown, loop and movement, with the movement being contained within an inner case with snap on case back. This design is robust and has helped protect the movement all these years, as evidenced by the cosmetic condition.
The silver section of the case has Birmingham assay office hallmarking, dating it to 1933/34. The case is quality, being Dennison made and of sturdy construction.
The dial has an off-white powder finish and is original. It is in very good condition for the age with only slight signs of ageing to the dial tone. The railroad minute track is clear, with large lumed Arabic numerals for the hours. The sub-second dial is inset and neatly layed out. The Cathedral style hands are excellent, with a bright thermally blued finish. The lume has been expertly re-finished and is non-radioactive.
Inside the double casing is the movement, a Rone Calibre 8.220 movement. It is a good quality movement with interesting, curved bridge design, balance cock and regulating arm. It has a gilt finish and has signing on the ratchet wheel in a beautiful font. The condition is exceptional, whilst the surfaces have signs have high quality finishing with polished bevels and brushed finishing. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time as well as it looks, with a daily variation of 10 seconds a day.
