Here we have a lovely example of a circa 1931 ladies Art Deco 9ct gold cased, jump hour watch. It has an AS 748 manual wind movement with 15 jewels, which displays the hours and minutes. These are presented on discs which show through the apertures cut into the front of the case. The white painted discs are original and untouched, with the black Arabic numerals and tracks. The apertures are framed with the rectangular front, with the bevelled sides. The lugs are fixed gold bars. The sides of the case have the same polished finish. to the right is the neat coin edge crown. The case back is free of personal engravings and has the clear serial number. The case is petite in its proportions, measuring 12.25mm wide x 26.75mm long, with the total lug-to-lug length of 30mm.
The case is 9ct gold and has hallmarking from Glasgow assay office, with the date letter dating it to 1931. It has the UK makers mark ‘SD’ which is the mark of Sylvain Dreyfus, who was the UK importer of Rotary watches.
Rotary watches Ltd were established in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland by Moise Dreyfuss in 1895. In the 1920s family members Georges and Sylvain Dreyfuss began exporting Rotary watches into Britain, via the M Dreyfus watch manufacturers name, in Moorfield, London EC2.
Inside is the AS 748, 15 jewel Jump hour movement, displaying the hours and minutes. It is marked as “Cut & Compensated Balance A.I.”.
The movement has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within 60 seconds variation a day.
