Here we have a compact and beautifully designed 1930s Movado Chronometre reference 12706. It has the 31.5mm stainless steel case with the circular bevelled bezel and neat tapered downturned lugs. To the right is the neat coin edge crown. The rear of the case snaps in place. It has the drilled lugs with easily removable spring bars that secure the period Swedish Imco steel bracelet. The dial is the silver tone with sector layout. To the outside is the minute/seconds track with the raised gold tone chapter and applied gold tone Arabic numerals. The sub second dial intersects this at 6 O’clock and is sunken into the dial. Below 12 is the ‘Chronometre’ signing with the ‘Movado’ name. Inside, the case is signed with the Movado logo, with the reference 12707. The movement is a Movado calibre 75 which is adjusted to 4 positions. It is a Chronometre manual wind movement, which has been recently serviced and keeps very accurate time for the age.
The interest in vintage Movado watches has increased in recent years, and rightly so. Watches such as this demonstrate the quality of design and timekeeping prowess that make them so appealing. This is a collectable reference due to its considered case design and ‘Chronometre’ grade.
The case measures 31.5mm x 31.5mm which makes this a compact gents watch from the period. The presence is increased by the 37.5mm lug-to-lug length. The depth of 8.75mm makes this a comfortable wear on the wrist, with a streamlined profile.
It has a somewhat awkward lug width of 17mm, thankfully it comes on a period stainless steel bracelet by the Swedish brand Imco. It is a beautiful bracelet with the larger staggered centre links, with paired links either side. It flows into the fold over clasp with the raised centre which accommodates the expanding section, which allows it to fit any wrist size.
The dial is beautiful with a blend of balance and texture that makes it a joy to look at. The dial splits into four circles, starting with the minute track. Then there are the raised boarders of the sector ring catch the eye in a rich gold tone. This separates into a centre ring which provides a clear canvas for the ‘Chronometre Movado’ signing. Finally, the sub-second dial rounds of the four circles. It is also inset which adds further texture.
This raised hour markers are simple, yet elegant. The larger 9, 12 and 3 balance the dial nicely with the inset sub-second dial positioned at 6.
The snap on back has the remains of the circular brushed finish. Inside of the case back has the ‘Stainless Steel’ signing with the reference 12707. It has the serial number 79670, as well as the Movado hand and pocket watch symbol.
The Movado calibre 75 is a robust and reliable, with this example having been originally certified as a chronometer. It is marked as adjusted to four positions to the bridge. It has been recently serviced and still shows its prowess with accurate timekeeping within 10 seconds variation a day.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
