Here we have a lovely example of an early 1930s Mimo Art Deco jump hour watch. It is in good original condition with a sharp case, presented on a period ‘Peerless’ steel bracelet. The case is of the facetted design with the brushed finish to the top and polished bevels to the sides. The top of bottom of the case angle down towards the wrist, with the lugs being centrally affixed, with the looped bracelet. To the right is the fine coin edge crown. The front of the case has the aperture for the hour disc and minutes disc. The sides of the case have the engraved boarder. Inside The case is signed with the ‘Mimo’ name and is marked as nickel Chromoum. The movement is marked as a Mimo calibre 90. It is manually wound and has been recently serviced, ensuring it keeps accurate time. The watch comes on the period ‘Peerless’ bracelet.
We love jump hours and know what makes a good example. The discs are bright and legible. This is vital as legibility is often an issue with losses of paint on jump hour discs. We don’t often chrome plated nickel cases often due to how worn many examples can be, but this is a good one, particularly with the sharp brushed finish to the top of the case.
The case is petite, sized for a lady. However, with the growing popularity of smaller ingenious watches being worn on any wrist, such as the Duoplan, we wouldn’t be too quick to pigeonhole this. I have spent time with it on my wrist which measures 17.78cm and it doesn’t look out of place. It is modelled on my wrist to give a sense of the proportion on a gents wrist. It measures just over 12mm wide with the case length of 27.6mm It has a slim depth of just over 6mm.
The top of the case provides a canvas for the brushed finishing, which catches the eye. Either side has the polished bevel which catches the light. The top and bottom of the case are angled downwards, with the polished finish, which further enhances the reactivity of the case. The apertures for the hours and minutes have the bevelled windows with the polished finishes. The minute window is beautifully curved with the pointer arrow to the centre to highlight the time.
The discs are clean and legible with the lightly aged tone to the white paint. The black Arabic numerals contrast well against this and are clear. To the right-hand side of the case of the case is the thin crown with the fine coin edge surround. Either side has the engraved boarder with the pattern design. The case back is subtly curved to fit the wrist.
The movement sits snuggly in the case and you are first presented with the hour and minute discs to the front. This is a novel experience you never get over with a jump hour. It provides such a change to the usual dial and hands.
With the movement removed, the case is signed with the ‘Mimo’ name and is marked as ‘Nickel Chromium’. It also has the serial number 766095.
The movement is marked as a Mimo calibre 90. It is a 15-jewel movement which is manually wound. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time to within 60 seconds per day.
The bracelet is from the period and is marked as ‘Peerless’, ‘Wearpruf’ with the patent ‘1.966.063’. It has the ratchet adjust to the clasp which allows adjustment to fit different wrist sizes. The bracelet will fit up to a 7” wrist circumference, meaning it will fit a ladies wrist, up to a smaller gents.
