For sale we have a very well-designed Silvana full-hunter, gold plated pocket watch from the mid 1930s. It has an ornate and slim case with a coin edge finish around the outside, a wreath engraved boarder to the edge of the front and rear, with a fish scale finish to the main face. The button on the crown is depressed to expose the dial.

The dial continues the ornate design touches, with applied gold tone Arabic numerals in a stylised font. The outer section of the dial has a matte gold tone, with a sector boarder having black and grey patterned design, giving way to a grained satin finish gold centre.

The hands are of an unusual and appealing serpent style, and they look sensational.

The case was manufactured by MGBM Geneve. The case back is double hinged, with an excellent Silvana manufactured calibre 411 movement. It is a thin and high-quality movement, with beautiful, curved bridge layout and gilt finishing. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within +/- 4 seconds a day.

The Silvana name was first placed on a watch dial and was trademarked in 1898 by Victor-Eugene Bahon, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking. In 1922, Victor installed the Manufacture d’Horlogerie Silvana SA in Tramelan-Dessus. After his passing in 1928, his partner and friend, Henri Arnold Lohner took over directorship, moving the company HQ to Biel, allowing for Silvana to benefit from the production capabilities of the region. This spurred the brand on to enter new international markets, acquiring new brands. They then moved back to Tramelan in 1935. They were known for producing good quality movements and pocket & wrist watches.

Overall, this is a very neat and well-designed Art Deco Full-hunter pocket watch. Having been recently serviced and being in good condition, this is an ideal pocket watch to be worn, or kept within a collection.
