1930s Art Deco Rotary stainless steel tank watch, Maximus movement, serviced A recently serviced, Rotary Maximus cal. 54 movement with 17 jewels is inside. It is keeping time to within +80 seconds a day.
The dial has a silvered finish with black baton hour markers, as well as Arabic 9,12,3. This is a pleasant design feature which is similar to the Jaeger Lecoulte Uniplan watches of the 30s. The modern style hands are also common place in 1930s Art Deco watches. The original curved glass is of a wonderful design, with its complex curved nature. This frames the dial well and means that the original, intended design remains un-compromised. This blends effortlessly into the neat and faceted edges of the case.
The case is incredibly reminiscent of the classic tank watches introduced by Cartier in the 1910s. For the case to be formed of Stainless Steel is relatively un-common in the 1930s and was reserved for more expensive watches, as it was more costly to use and more durable than chromium plating.
Overall, this is a very pleasantly designed watch from a reliable maker, who enjoyed large success in the UK market. It is in good condition and would make a great addition to a vintage watch collection.
