Here we have an elegant circa 1923 9ct gold square Art Deco watch. It very much resembles the best of Cartiers early design in the period. The case measures 25mm x 25mm with the eye catching 8 sided bevelled bezel. It has the short tapered lugs which match the proportions well. To the right is the coin edge crown, set with the sapphire cabochon. The silver dial has the radial roman numerals with the railroad track following the flow of the case. The hands are thermally blued and are of Breguet style. The rear of the case snaps in place. To the inside it has the hallmarking for 9ct gold, from London assay office, dating to 1923. It has the George Stockwell import mark.
The movement is a high grade Swiss lever calibre, which is ultra thin. It has similarities to LeCoultre Ebauches from the period. It has the underslung ratchet wheel with cap to the end stone on the escapement. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within 1 minute variation per day.
The dial is clean and classic in the silver satin tone. It has the radial roman numeral hour markers around the outside with the 8 sided railroad minute track following the shape of the bezel. It has the thermally blued hands which are Breguet style. This is an elegant mixture which is reminiscent of Cartiers styling during the period.
The case measures 25mm x 25mm. It is 27.5mm wide with crown and has a lug to lug measurement of 32.5mm. The ultra thin movement allows the case to sit at just 7mm deep which makes it a very comfortable wear.
It is formed of 9ct gold with the snap on bezel and case back. The bezel has the bevelled surround which falls to meet the central section of the case. It is the square shape with the chamfered corners which give it the octagonal appearance. The lugs are neat with the taper inwards and down towards the wrist. It has the fixed bar lugs which are good and sturdy. To the right is the crown with the coin edge finish and Sapphire cabochon inset.
The inside of the case back has hallmarking for 9ct gold from London assay office dating to 1923. It has the ‘GS’ makers mark for George Stockwell, a well known importer of Swiss watches into the UK.
The movement is a high grade Swiss lever calibre, which is ultra thin. It has similarities to LeCoultre Ebauches from the period, with the underslung ratchet wheel, perlage under the balance and escapement and cap to the end stone on the escapement. It has been recently serviced and is keeping time to within 1 minute variation per day.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
