It has the IWC Shaffhausen signing with the inset sub-second dial. The hands are thermally blued, of classic spade and whip style. The double hinged back has the polished finish externally. The inside of the case backs has marks from London assay office for 18ct gold, dating to 1920. It has the makers mark for Charles Nicolet. The movement is the IWC calibre 64 in hunter configuration. The dial is formed of enamel with the classic layout. It has the railroad minute track around the exterior with the bold markers for the hours and diamond markers on the quarters. It has the clear Roman numeral hour markers. The sub-second dial is inset, with the classic railroad layout having the 5 second dashes and 10 second arabic signing. The ‘IWC’ name sits proudly below 12 o’clock with the ‘Shaffhausen’ name underneath. The hands are of double spade and whip style. The double spade is used so the hour can be clearly seen through the half hunter window. They are a thermally blued tone which is bright and even, catching the eye. The sub-second hand is also original.

The case is neatly proportioned, measuring 31.5mm x 31.5mm. It has a total lug-to-lug measurement of 36mm, with a depth of 10mm. The lug width is classic for the era at 12mm.

The half hunter configuration is a pleasing design with the bonus of the protection provided by the front cover, whilst allowing you to peek at the time. The track and roman numerals are engraved and filled with the original dark blue enamel. To the right is the onion style crown which is good to wind, jutting out from the case. The button below releases the front cover, to allow a full view of the time.

The main section of the case has the fixed bar lugs to each end which are sturdy. To the rear is the double hinged case back. The rear has the polished finish and the notch to the side for opening. Inside it is signed with the hallmarking from London assay office for 18ct gold, dating to 1920. It has the ‘CN’ makers mark for Charles Nicolet. The serial number is good and clear. All markings match that of the inner hinged back.

The movement is an IWC calibre 64 which is a savonnette (hunter) movement. The calibre was used in all IWC watches up until 1915, due to its compact size and the dial layout with crown at 3 and sub-seconds at 6. It is a manual wind movement, with a jewel count of 15. The jewels are set in screwed chatons. It has a frequency of 18,000 BPH. It has a Breguet overcoil hair spring and benefits from Geneva stopwork on the mainspring. It has been recently serviced and has a daily variation of 60 seconds per day.

The time is not crown set, it is lever set. Pop open the front cover and at 4 o'clock is a little lever which is pulled outwards to set the time.
