1919 Rare and early Zenith Silver Cushion case watch, 10.5’’’ NSI

A well designed and neat example of a very early Zenith wristwatch. It has a signed dial, case and movement. Inside is a Zenith calibre 10.5’’’ NSI, which has been recently serviced and is keeping excellent time for a watch of this age. The silver case is in excellent condition with thick silver wire lugs. The silver dial has some areas where the base tone has darkened, striking a wabi-sabi balance, with the fresher case shining, with a slightly aged dial.

The case is of cushion shape and is made of silver. It is well proportioned, measuring 30mm x 30mm with a lug-to-lug measurement of 34mm. The case is formed of 3 pieces. The centre section is the main piece of the case, with the silver wire lugs attached. The wire lugs are strong and in good condition for the age. The bezel pushes onto the centre piece of the case, with the case back being a solid piece that pushes onto the rear central piece.

The cushion shape is very pleasing and really nicely designed with the bezel and case back falling into the central piece of the case.

The case back is formed of silver. It’s in good condition, having light surface scratching associated with age. The inside of the case back is in good condition with peerlage finishing. It has the Zenith name signed, with Swiss hallmarking for silver. The case serial number is 3220648. There are some scratches at the top of the inside, which have been caused by opening.

The dial is original and has a silver satin base tone. The dial is in good, patinated condition. The dial has some areas where the base tone has darkened, but this isn’t unattractive. It strikes a wabi-sabi balance, with the fresher case shining, with a slightly aged dial.

The black signing on the dial is in good condition. The dial is signed Zenith below 12 O’clock. It has a simple railroad hour track around the exterior, with Arabic numeral hour marks. The sub-second dial is in-set into the dial, with a railroad track and 10 second Arabic graduations.

The hands are original and are in good condition. They are of spade and whip style. They are thermally blued and have aged to a purple/brown tone which is even and very attractive.

The crystal is a modern replacement and is in very good condition.

The crown is a well-matched replacement which is a better seal, aiding the watch to have better water resistance. It is in very good condition with a neat coin edge finish.

The watch is currently on a 19mm black nato strap, but the watch can also be provided on a single piece leather strap which matches the era.

The movement is a Zenith calibre 10.5’’’ NSI with the serial number 2,347,198, dating to 1919. This movement was the predecessor of the calibre 106 and was found in the earliest Zenith wrist watches.

It has 15 jewels and operates at a beat rate of 18,000 BPH. It has a power reserve of 38 hours. The movement has an interesting cam disc regulator. The movement has been recently serviced. It has a daily gain of +15 seconds, with an amplitude of 308 degrees and a beat error of 0.2 m/s.
