Here we have a beautiful antique circa 1914 Longines silver cased trench style watch. It has the hinged case back and hinged front. The case is well proportioned measuring 35mm wide without crown. To the right is the original onion style crown which is stem wind and set. It has the classic silver wire lugs to the top and bottom. The dial is a bright white enamel with classic railroad minute track and bold Arabic numerals. These are in-filled with the aged tone luminous paint. The hands are thermally blued, of cathedral style. There is a beautiful flowing personal engraving of initials to the rear. The inside of the case is marked with UK import hallmarking by London assay office with the date letter for 1914. It has the makers mark for George Stockwell. Inside is the Longines calibre 13.34, which is a 15-jewel manual wind movement. It has been recently serviced and is keeping accurate time.
The enamel dial is the bright white tone and is free of any cracks or chips. It has the classic black railroad track to the exterior with the thicker black batons for the 5-minute graduations. The hour markers are bold Arabic numerals with the aged luminous in-fill. At 6 o’clock is the inset sub-second dial which has the railroad track. The sub-second hand is thermally blued with the lollipop counterbalance. The hour and minute hands are also thermally blued, of cathedral style.
The case measures 35mm x 35mm which makes this a well-sized watch. The crown adds significant presence with its size, taking the total width to 37.5mm. The lugs also add further presence, extending from the case and taking the total length to 51mm. With a depth of 12mm, this is a neat watch sitting nicely on the wrist. The fixed bar lugs have a 12mm strap width.
The case is a classic design from the period with the hinged front and hinged case back. The lugs are attached to the centre of the case with the wire sections passing through. Both the front and the rear snap into place well and have a good seal. The hinges are also strong. To the right-hand side is the original onion style crown which has a pleasing patina. The wire lugs are original with the London assay office marks. It is very uncommon for these to be intact one such an old watch as they get pulled by a strap throughout the watch’s life. The case back has the personal engraving with the original owner’s initials. This is a beautiful engraving with the flowing, almost floral font. It is such a shame we have lost the skill of hand engraving in this manner.
Inside the case is marked with British import hallmarking from London assay office. The date letter ‘t’ corresponds with the 1914 manufacture. It is marked with the ‘GS’ sponsor mark of George Stockwell, a renown Swiss watch importer.
The movement is the Longines calibre 13.34, which is a 15-jewel manual wind movement. It has been recently serviced and is keeping very accurate time to within 20 seconds variation a day, with an amplitude of 330 degrees and a beat error of 0.4m/s.
The watch is modelled on a 7” wrist circumference.
